Brampton West produced one of the most significant results of the 2025 federal election, as Conservative challenger Amarjeet Gill defeated Liberal incumbent Kamal Khera, who was serving as Minister of Health at the time of the election. Khera was the only sitting cabinet minister to lose her seat on election night. The riding covers the western portion of Brampton, a suburban landscape of residential subdivisions, commercial plazas, and warehousing operations, with a large and politically engaged South Asian community.
Candidates
Amarjeet Gill (Conservative)* came to Canada from India in 1998 and has lived in Brampton for over twenty years. He holds qualifications in engineering, political science, and an MBA, and his professional career has spanned quality assurance in the automotive, industrial, and aerospace sectors, as well as service as an adjudicator at Tribunals Ontario. His grandfather and father both served in the Armed Forces during the First and Second World Wars respectively. Gill previously ran as an Ontario Progressive Conservative candidate in the 2011 and 2014 provincial elections.
Kamal Khera (Liberal) was the incumbent, first elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 and 2021. Born in Delhi, India, she graduated from York University with an honours bachelor of science in nursing and worked as a registered nurse in the palliative and oncology units at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto before entering politics. She served as Minister of Seniors, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities, and most recently as Minister of Health.
Zaigham Javed (NDP) ran on a platform emphasizing social justice and workers' rights.
Sameera Khan (Green Party) has a background in education and student services, with leadership experience at York University and the University of Toronto and international teaching experience in South Korea. Her campaign focused on affordable housing and transit.
Khawaja Amir Hassan (Centrist) also stood as a candidate. The top six candidates by vote are listed above.
About the Riding
Brampton West's result was widely seen as a reflection of voter frustration with the Liberal government in a riding that had been considered a safe seat. Khera's tenure had been marked by several controversies over the years that provided ammunition for opponents. Gill's victory cracked what had been a Liberal fortress across Brampton, even as the party held every other Brampton riding.
The riding's issues mirrored those across the city: housing costs, healthcare access, immigration policy, and the economic uncertainty generated by US trade tensions. Many residents work in warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing operations concentrated along Brampton's western industrial corridors, making trade policy a kitchen-table issue. The result demonstrated that even in ridings with strong Liberal brand loyalty among immigrant communities, the right combination of local candidate strength and national headwinds could shift the outcome.
