Battle River--Crowfoot

Battle River--Crowfoot is one of Canada's largest federal ridings by area, covering more than 52,000 square kilometres of east-central Alberta. The district stretches from the Highway 14 corridor in the north to the Red Deer River badlands in the south, and from the Saskatchewan border eastward to roughly the Highway 56 corridor west of Camrose. Its largest city is Camrose (population approximately 19,000), followed by Drumheller (about 8,000) — famous for its Royal Tyrrell Museum and dramatic hoodoo formations — and the garrison town of Wainwright (roughly 7,000), home to Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. Other communities include Stettler, Hanna, Provost, and Three Hills.

Candidates

Damien Kurek (Conservative) — Raised on a farm near Consort, Alberta, Kurek studied political science and communications at Trinity Western University after attending Eston College. Before running for office he worked in the constituency office of longtime MP Kevin Sorenson and held roles at the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly. First elected in 2019, he was appointed the Conservative shadow minister for Canadian Heritage.

Tonya Ratushniak (NDP) — A registered psychiatric nurse and mental-health therapist at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose, Ratushniak has also served as president of the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta. She previously served as mayor of the village of New Norway and entered federal politics after witnessing chronic staffing shortages in rural healthcare firsthand.

Leah Diane McLeod (Liberal) — McLeod carried the Liberal banner in a riding where the party has historically struggled to gain traction. She campaigned on strengthening rural broadband access and diversifying the local economy beyond resource extraction.

Dennis Trepanier (PPC) — Trepanier represented the People's Party of Canada, running on the party's platform of reduced government intervention, lower immigration targets, and opposition to pandemic-related public-health mandates.

About the Riding

The landscape of Battle River--Crowfoot is defined by open prairie, dryland grain farming, cattle ranching, and pockets of oil-and-gas development. The Battle River — a tributary of the North Saskatchewan — winds through the northern portion of the riding, while the Red Deer River and its spectacular badlands carve through the south near Drumheller. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy: canola, wheat, and barley dominate the cropland, and large feedlot operations are common in the southern counties.

Camrose, the riding's service hub, hosts Augustana — the University of Alberta's liberal-arts campus — and serves as a regional centre for healthcare, retail, and government services. CFB Wainwright, one of the Canadian Armed Forces' primary training bases, is a major employer in the riding's eastern reaches and hosts large-scale military exercises each year.

With a median age of roughly 43 and an average individual income of about $51,650, the riding's demographics skew older and more rural than the provincial average. Battle River--Crowfoot is one of the most reliably Conservative seats in the country; the party and its predecessors have held the territory without interruption since the Reform Party wave of 1993, routinely capturing well over 60 percent of the vote.
