Red Deer—Mountain View

Red Deer—Mountain View spans the southern half of the City of Red Deer and a broad swath of central Alberta's ranching and farming country. The riding takes in Mountain View County, portions of Red Deer County south of the David Thompson Highway, and the communities of Innisfail, Olds, Sundre, Bowden, Didsbury, and Carstairs. To the west, the foothills of the Rocky Mountains rise along the horizon; to the east, the landscape flattens into the open prairie of the aspen parkland zone. The Red Deer River winds through the southern edge of the riding, carving coulees and benchlands that define much of the region's topography. The town of Olds — population approximately 9,200 in the 2021 census — anchors the riding's western corridor, while Innisfail (population roughly 8,000) serves as a service hub for the agricultural hinterland to the south.

Candidates

Earl Dreeshen (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, first elected to represent the former Red Deer riding in 2008 and subsequently re-elected in Red Deer—Mountain View in 2015 and 2019. Before entering politics, Dreeshen spent 34 years as a physics and mathematics teacher in central Alberta. He also farmed in the region and was active in community coaching and volunteerism. His son, Devin Dreeshen, serves as a provincial MLA in the area.

Marie Grabowski (NDP) — A medical laboratory technologist at the Red Deer Hospital and a resident of Red Deer County. Running for public office for the first time, Grabowski served as co-chair of her union local and vice-president of the Red Deer Labour Council. Her campaign focused on affordable housing, universal pharmacare, and sustainable economic development.

Kelly Lorencz (PPC) — A Canadian Armed Forces veteran who served with the Canadian Airborne Regiment and Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. After his military career, Lorencz spent over a decade working as a corrections officer and hostage negotiator. He resided on an acreage near Innisfail and co-authored the People's Party's veterans' policy platform.

Olumide Adewumi (Liberal) — A chemical and petroleum engineer who immigrated to Alberta and built a career in the oil and gas sector before becoming a small business owner and entrepreneur. Adewumi holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical and petroleum engineering and ran on a platform emphasizing energy-sector leadership and community investment.

About the Riding

The economy of Red Deer—Mountain View blends the urban commercial base of southern Red Deer with the agricultural and ranching traditions of the surrounding counties. Red Deer — Alberta's third-largest city, with a 2021 census population of approximately 100,800 — is the regional service and retail centre for central Alberta, situated midway along the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor. The southern half of the city contained within this riding includes downtown Red Deer, its hospital, post-secondary institutions, and government offices. Beyond the city limits, cattle ranching, grain farming, and mixed agriculture dominate the landscape, with Mountain View County alone encompassing nearly 13,000 residents spread across vast tracts of rangeland and cropland.

The riding's smaller communities each carry distinct economic identities. Olds is home to Olds College — a polytechnic institution with national recognition in agriculture and technology programs — and was an early Canadian leader in municipal broadband infrastructure. Innisfail serves as a supply centre for the surrounding farming district and hosts the Innisfail Auction Mart, one of the region's busiest livestock exchanges. Sundre, Bowden, and Carstairs are smaller communities where local businesses, schools, and churches form the fabric of daily life.

Oil and gas activity has historically supplemented agricultural income throughout the riding, with pipelines, well sites, and service companies providing employment in the rural portions of the constituency. The energy sector downturn that began in 2014 reduced drilling activity and pipeline construction, leaving some communities with fewer jobs and lower municipal tax revenues. Diversification into renewable energy and value-added agriculture was a topic of growing local discussion heading into the 2021 campaign.

Healthcare access was a persistent concern. Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre serves a catchment area far larger than the city itself, and residents in rural parts of the riding frequently travel considerable distances to reach medical services. Recruitment of family physicians to smaller communities like Sundre and Bowden remained an ongoing challenge, with some residents relying on walk-in clinics or emergency departments for routine care.
