About the Riding
Many residents commute westward to Vancouver, Burnaby, or the Tri-Cities for work, and the riding's rapid population growth intensified pressure on transportation infrastructure. The Lougheed Highway and Golden Ears Bridge are the primary east–west arterials, and traffic congestion was a persistent campaign concern. The West Coast Express commuter rail line provides weekday service from Maple Ridge to downtown Vancouver, but frequency and capacity had not kept pace with growth. Housing affordability was a central issue, as families priced out of Vancouver's core drove up demand in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Agriculture remains culturally and economically significant — a large portion of Pitt Meadows lies within the Agricultural Land Reserve, producing blueberries, cranberries, and dairy products. Flooding risk is an ongoing concern, as Pitt Meadows sits on a floodplain at the confluence of two rivers and depends on an aging system of dikes and pump stations for protection.
