About the Riding
Fleetwood—Port Kells reflects the multicultural character of modern Surrey. Punjabi, Chinese, Tagalog, and Korean are among the most commonly spoken languages alongside English, and the riding's religious landscape includes significant Sikh, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu communities. The area is overwhelmingly residential and suburban, with residents commuting to employment centres throughout Metro Vancouver. Transit connectivity—particularly the planned extension of the SkyTrain system along the Fleetwood corridor into Surrey and Langley—was a persistent local concern heading into 2019. Port Kells, along the Fraser River, retains a more industrial and agricultural character, with warehouses, light manufacturing, and farmland. Barnston Island, accessible only by a short free ferry, is a small agricultural community that stands in sharp contrast to the suburban density of the rest of the riding. Population growth has placed ongoing pressure on schools, roads, healthcare services, and community infrastructure throughout Surrey.
