Yellowhead is one of Alberta's largest federal ridings by area, covering a vast expanse of the province's western interior from the foothills east of the Rockies to the British Columbia border. Named for the Yellowhead Pass through the Canadian Rockies, the riding takes in Jasper National Park and the resource-dependent communities of Edson, Hinton, and Drayton Valley, along with portions of Yellowhead County, Brazeau County, and Clearwater County.
Candidates
Gerald Soroka (Conservative) — A third-generation Yellowhead County resident, Soroka lives on the original homestead his grandparents settled in the 1930s, north of Evansburg. He farmed for most of his life before entering municipal politics, serving as a county councillor from 2004 to 2007 and then as mayor of Yellowhead County from 2007 until his nomination. He also held leadership positions with the West Central Forage Association and the Alberta Forage Council. Soroka won the Conservative nomination to replace retiring MP Jim Eglinski.
Kristine Bowman (NDP) — Bowman carried the NDP banner in the riding, running in a constituency where the party had historically struggled against dominant Conservative margins.
Jeremy Hoefsloot (Liberal) — A practicing lawyer and political activist, Hoefsloot had studied political science and philosophy at the University of Alberta and served as chairperson of the Young Liberals of Canada in Alberta.
Douglas Galavan (People's Party), Angelena Satdeo (Green Party), Cory Lystang (Libertarian), and Gordon Francey (Veterans Coalition) also sought election.
About the Riding
Yellowhead's enormous geography produces a constituency of sharply contrasting communities. Jasper, inside the national park, depends heavily on tourism, welcoming millions of visitors annually to the surrounding mountain wilderness. The forestry towns of Hinton (population roughly 10,000) and Edson (about 8,500) anchor the riding's central corridor along the Yellowhead Highway. Hinton's economy is closely tied to pulp and paper manufacturing and lumber production, while Edson serves as a supply and logistics hub for forestry and oil and gas operations in the surrounding foothills.
Drayton Valley, in Brazeau County at the riding's southeastern edge, is an oil and gas hub that was among the Alberta communities most affected by the post-2014 energy downturn, experiencing business closures and population loss as drilling activity declined. The surrounding rural areas support cattle ranching and mixed farming on the eastern plains transitioning into foothills terrain.
The riding's sheer size — requiring hours of driving to traverse — creates particular challenges for service delivery. Residents in remote communities may travel considerable distances to reach a hospital, and recruitment of health care professionals to smaller centres is an ongoing struggle. Internet and cellular connectivity remain unreliable in many rural and mountainous areas. Energy sector policy, pipeline access, forestry management, and parks policy were central federal issues for the riding in 2019.
