Churchill—Keewatinook Aski

Churchill—Keewatinook Aski encompasses the northern four-fifths of Manitoba, covering more than 420,000 square kilometres of boreal forest, tundra, and Hudson Bay coastline. The riding's name pairs the port town of Churchill with the Cree words for "Northern Land," reflecting a constituency where a majority of residents identify as First Nations. Major population centres include Thompson, The Pas, Flin Flon, Churchill, and Gillam, along with dozens of First Nations communities such as Norway House, Cross Lake, and Garden Hill.

Candidates

Niki Ashton (NDP) — The incumbent MP, born and raised in Thompson and first elected to Parliament in 2008. Ashton held a bachelor's degree from the University of Manitoba and a master's degree in international affairs from Carleton University. She had worked as an instructor at University College of the North before entering politics and ran for the federal NDP leadership in both 2012 and 2017.

Judy Klassen (Liberal) — A sitting Manitoba MLA who represented the provincial riding of Kewatinook, which she won in 2016. Originally from St. Theresa Point First Nation, located roughly 465 kilometres north of Winnipeg, Klassen left the provincial legislature to seek the federal Liberal nomination, which she won in July 2019.

Cyara Bird (Conservative) — A young mother from Little Black River First Nation who made her political debut in this campaign. Bird focused her campaign on improving mental health and addictions services in the north, addressing crime and gang violence, and supporting mineral resource development.

Ralph McLean (Green Party) and Ken Klyne (People's Party) also sought election.

About the Riding

The riding's immense geography presents challenges found in few other constituencies in Canada. Many communities are accessible only by air year-round or by winter roads during the coldest months, and the cost of food and household goods in remote areas runs far above southern prices. Thompson, with roughly 13,000 residents, serves as the regional hub and was originally built around nickel mining operations. The Pas functions as a centre for forestry and post-secondary education through University College of the North.

Churchill, on the western shore of Hudson Bay, is Canada's only Arctic deepwater port and a globally recognized destination for polar bear and beluga whale tourism. Hydroelectric generation along the Nelson and Churchill rivers provides much of Manitoba's electrical power and is a major employer. Clean drinking water access, housing conditions on reserves, broadband connectivity, and the high cost of northern living were pressing campaign issues in 2019. The riding's NDP roots run deep, reinforced by strong organizational ties to First Nations communities and the labour movement in mining and forestry towns.
