Humber River--Black Creek occupies the northwest corner of the former City of North York, taking in the neighbourhoods of Jane and Finch, Humber Summit, Humbermede, Humberlea, and the western edge of Downsview. Two waterways define its geography -- the Humber River along the western boundary and Black Creek, a tributary flowing through the riding's interior. The constituency is one of the most diverse in Canada, with more residents speaking a non-official language as a mother tongue than speaking English or French.
Candidates
Judy Sgro (Liberal) -- The incumbent MP, who had represented the area continuously since winning a 1999 by-election in the former York West riding. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Sgro moved to Toronto as a child and entered public life through municipal politics, serving on North York City Council beginning in 1987 and later on Metro Toronto Council and Toronto City Council. She had served as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration in the Paul Martin government.
Maria Augimeri (NDP) -- A former Toronto city councillor who had served on council from 1985 through 2018, first on North York council and then on the amalgamated Toronto council. Augimeri was appointed chair of the Toronto Transit Commission in 2014 and served as chair of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority board until 2019. She lost her council seat when the Ontario government reduced the number of Toronto wards from forty-seven to twenty-five before the 2018 municipal election, merging her ward with an adjacent one.
Iftikhar Choudry (Conservative) -- The Conservative Party candidate in the riding.
Mike Schmitz (Green Party) -- The Green Party candidate in Humber River--Black Creek.
Ania Krosinska ran for the People's Party, Stenneth Smith for the United Party of Canada, and Christine Nugent for the Marxist-Leninist Party.
About the Riding
The Jane and Finch neighbourhood, centred on the intersection of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West, is the riding's most recognized community. Built largely in the 1960s and 1970s as a planned community of high-rise apartment towers and townhouse complexes, the area has long served as a landing place for newcomers and lower-income families. Community organizations including the Jane-Finch Community and Family Centre provide services and programming to thousands of residents, working to address challenges including youth unemployment and poverty.
York University's Keele campus, with over fifty thousand students, sits just east of the riding boundary and is a major institutional presence. The Toronto-York Spadina subway extension, which opened in late 2017, brought new rapid transit service to the area with a station at York University, improving connectivity for the riding's northwestern communities. The Finch West LRT, with construction beginning in 2019, promised further transit improvements along the Finch Avenue corridor. Housing affordability in the riding's many aging rental towers remained a pressing concern, as tenants in buildings requiring capital repairs faced above-guideline rent increases. The riding consistently registered among the lowest voter turnout rates in Ontario, reflecting disengagement rooted in the socioeconomic challenges facing many of its residents.
