Vaughan—Woodbridge

Vaughan—Woodbridge sat in York Region north of Toronto, covering the portion of the City of Vaughan west of Highway 400 and south of Major Mackenzie Drive. First contested in 2015, the riding was centred on Woodbridge, a community along the Humber River valley that had become a major destination for Italian immigrants beginning in the 1950s. By 2019, nearly half the riding's population reported Italian ethnic origins, making it one of the most Italian-Canadian communities in the country.

Candidates

Francesco Sorbara (Liberal) — The incumbent MP, first elected in 2015. Born and raised in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to parents who emigrated from southern Italy, Sorbara earned an honours degree in economics and finance from Simon Fraser University and a master of arts in economics from the University of Toronto. He held the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and had spent nearly two decades in global capital markets at JPMorgan Chase, DBRS, and the Bank of Nova Scotia.

Teresa Kruze (Conservative) — A former broadcast journalist who was one of Canada's first female sportscasters at TSN before transitioning to hard news with 680 News and CP24. Kruze had been a Newmarket resident for nearly 20 years heading into the campaign.

Peter DeVita (NDP) — An engineer and president of Engineers for the Profession Inc., an advocacy organization focused on ensuring engineering licensing keeps pace with technological change. DeVita also taught at Sheridan College.

Raquel Fronte (Green Party) — The Green Party candidate in the riding, who had previously run as a provincial Green candidate in Brampton East in 2018.

Domenic Montesano (People's Party) and Muhammad Hassan Khan (Independent) also contested the seat.

About the Riding

Woodbridge's identity was forged by decades of post-war Italian immigration. Italian-owned bakeries, construction firms, restaurants, and professional practices were woven into the community's commercial and cultural fabric, and annual festivals celebrating Italian heritage drew large crowds. More than sixty percent of residents identified as Roman Catholic, reflecting the community's southern Italian roots. While the Italian-Canadian population remained dominant, growing South Asian, East Asian, and Latin American communities were diversifying the riding's demographic profile.

Many residents commuted south to Toronto along Highway 400 or the toll Highway 407 for employment in professional services, finance, and construction. Locally, economic activity centred on retail, real estate development, and small business. The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre — a planned urban growth node anchored by the TTC's Line 1 subway extension, which opened in December 2017 — was beginning to attract condominium development and office tenants, though commercial occupancy lagged behind projections.

Traffic congestion was a daily frustration for commuters, and residents advocated for improved transit connections and highway capacity. Housing affordability, while less acute than in downtown Toronto, was an emerging concern for younger families in a market where property values had climbed steadily. The Humber River, which ran through the riding, provided recreational amenity but also carried flood-risk history — the Woodbridge area experienced devastating flooding during Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority maintained flood-plain regulations along the river corridor.
