St. Catharines

St. Catharines occupies the northern entrance to the Welland Canal in Ontario's Niagara Peninsula. The riding covers much of the city proper, from the historic lakefront village of Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario through the downtown commercial core along St. Paul Street to the residential neighbourhoods climbing toward Brock University on the Niagara Escarpment. Known as "The Garden City" for its parks and proximity to the vineyards that line the escarpment bench, St. Catharines serves as the administrative seat of the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

Candidates

Chris Bittle (Liberal) --- Born in Niagara Falls, Bittle graduated from Queen's University and earned his law degree from the University of Windsor. He practised civil litigation at Lancaster, Brooks and Welch LLP in St. Catharines, specializing in commercial disputes and real estate matters. Before entering politics, he chaired the board of Quest Community Health Centre and taught at Niagara College and Brock University. First elected in 2015, he was appointed Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons in 2017.

Krystina Waler (Conservative) --- Born and raised in St. Catharines, Waler holds a Master of Science from the University of Toronto. Her career focused on international humanitarian work --- she served as executive director of Help Us Help, a charity supporting vulnerable children and veterans in Ukraine, and was active in the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Dennis Van Meer (NDP) --- Van Meer was a labour activist and long-time St. Catharines resident. He was the sole candidate to submit a nomination application and was acclaimed as the NDP candidate in January 2019.

Travis Mason (Green Party) --- Mason carried the Green Party banner in St. Catharines, raising environmental issues relevant to the Niagara waterway corridor.

Allan DeRoo (People's Party) also ran in the riding.

About the Riding

The Welland Canal has defined St. Catharines since the first canal was built in the 1820s, establishing the city as a commercial hub on the Niagara Peninsula. The modern canal --- completed in 1932 --- carries ocean-going vessels between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, and ships passing through the locks remain part of daily life. Brock University, established on the escarpment in 1964, is one of the city's largest employers and a significant economic driver. Its Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute connects the university to the Niagara wine industry, which operates dozens of wineries along the escarpment and lakeshore. Tourism fuelled by proximity to Niagara Falls, the wine route, and the charm of Port Dalhousie contributes meaningfully to the local economy. St. Catharines has undergone an economic transition from its manufacturing roots --- the General Motors plant, once a major employer, had been through years of downsizing --- and the city's unemployment rate remained above the provincial average heading into 2019. Affordable housing was an emerging concern as the city attracted residents priced out of the Toronto market. The opioid crisis had affected downtown St. Catharines acutely, and access to mental health and addiction services was a persistent issue during the campaign.
