Mount Royal

Located on Montreal's western slopes, the riding of Mount Royal takes in the City of Cote Saint-Luc, the Towns of Hampstead and Mount Royal, the Snowdon neighbourhood, and the western section of Cote-des-Neiges. A Liberal stronghold for generations—no Conservative had won here since 1935—the riding had been represented since 2015 by Anthony Housefather, who succeeded longtime MP Irwin Cotler.

Candidates

Anthony Housefather (Liberal) — The incumbent MP, Housefather had been the mayor of Cote Saint-Luc from 2005 until his election to Parliament in 2015. A lawyer with degrees from McGill University and an MBA from Concordia University's John Molson School of Business, he had first entered municipal politics as a Hampstead town councillor in 1994. During his first parliamentary term, he chaired the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

David Tordjman (Conservative) — A city councillor in Cote Saint-Luc, Tordjman had professional experience in public works and engineering and had worked for the United Nations in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. He focused his campaign on government ethics and fiscal responsibility.

Eric-Abel Baland (NDP) — Originally from France and a Montreal resident since 1999, Baland had worked in the performing arts and the economic development of socio-cultural organizations for decades in both Europe and Canada.

Clement Badra (Green Party) — Badra represented the Green Party in a riding where the party had limited historical support. Xavier Levesque (Bloc Quebecois), Zachary Lozoff (People's Party), and Diane Johnston (ML) also stood as candidates.

About the Riding

Mount Royal is among Canada's most ethnically and linguistically diverse ridings, with Cote-des-Neiges home to more than one hundred distinct ethnic communities. The riding has a substantial Jewish population and is significantly multilingual, with English, French, and dozens of other languages spoken across its neighbourhoods. Cote Saint-Luc and Hampstead are largely anglophone suburban municipalities that demerged from the City of Montreal in 2006, while the Town of Mount Royal is a planned garden community developed in the early twentieth century by the Canadian Northern Railway. Cote-des-Neiges, home to the Universite de Montreal, draws a large student and immigrant population. Affordable housing, immigrant settlement services, and public transit improvements were among the principal local concerns heading into the 2019 campaign.
