Covering the northern reaches of the city of Longueuil and much of the borough of Saint-Hubert, this riding sits on Montreal's South Shore between the St. Lawrence River and the suburban sprawl extending toward Brossard. The former grounds of Canadian Forces Base Saint-Hubert — now partly converted to commercial and residential use — mark the riding's southern edge, while Parc Michel-Chartrand, one of the largest urban parks in the region, provides nearly two million square metres of green space.
Candidates
Denis Trudel (Bloc Québécois) — A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada in 1987, Trudel built a career as an actor appearing in numerous films and television series, including Pierre Falardeau's Octobre and Jean-Marc Vallée's C.R.A.Z.Y. He sought to win the seat from the NDP, which had held it since 2011.
Réjean Hébert (Liberal) — A geriatrician by training, Hébert served as Quebec's Minister of Health and Social Services under the Pauline Marois government from 2012 to 2014. At the time of his candidacy, he was dean of the School of Public Health at the Université de Montréal.
Pierre Nantel (Green Party) — Nantel had represented Longueuil—Saint-Hubert as an NDP member of Parliament since 2011 but was expelled from the NDP caucus in August 2019 after it emerged he had been in discussions about running for another party. He subsequently joined the Green Party, citing the urgency of climate action, and sought re-election under the new banner.
Éric Ferland (NDP) — A former leader of the Green Party of Quebec in the mid-1990s, Ferland was recruited by the NDP as their candidate to replace the departing Nantel. He was co-founder and executive director of the Foire Écosphère, an environmental trade show.
Patrick Clune (Conservative) and Ellen Comeau (People's Party) also ran. Pierre-Luc Filion stood as an independent.
About the Riding
Longueuil—Saint-Hubert is predominantly francophone, with French as the mother tongue of roughly four-fifths of residents. The riding's economy is driven by the service sector and light manufacturing, with the former military base area undergoing redevelopment into commercial parks and residential subdivisions. Public transit links to Montreal via bus and the Longueuil metro station make the riding a popular commuter community. The 2019 race was unusually complex: the incumbent NDP seat was contested by the former MP running under a new party banner, a prominent former provincial cabinet minister, and a well-known actor turned sovereigntist politician.
