Candidates
Francis Scarpaleggia (Liberal) — First elected in 2004, Scarpaleggia was seeking his sixth consecutive mandate. Holding degrees from McGill University, Columbia University, and Concordia University, he had taught business administration at Dawson College and worked at Petro-Canada before entering politics. In Parliament, he became recognized for his work on freshwater protection and water policy.
Ann Francis (Conservative) — Francis held bachelor's degrees in both civil law and common law from McGill University, having initially studied political science at Concordia. She worked as a financial consultant at a national wealth management firm and sat on the boards of several non-profit organizations.
Dana Chevalier (NDP) — A lawyer, mediator, and municipal councillor in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Chevalier brought both legal expertise and local government experience to the NDP's campaign in this West Island riding.
Milan Kona-Mancini (Green Party) — Kona-Mancini represented the Green Party in a riding where waterfront environmental stewardship and green-space preservation resonated with voters.
Julie Benoît (Bloc Québécois) — Benoît stood for the Bloc in a riding where the sovereigntist movement has historically found little traction among the predominantly anglophone electorate.
Gary Charles (People's Party), Victoria de Martigny (Animal Protection Party), and Ralston Coelho (Nationalist) also appeared on the ballot.
About the Riding
Lac-Saint-Louis has returned Liberal members in every election since the riding's creation in 1997, making it one of the safest Liberal seats in Quebec. The communities are largely English-speaking and affluent, with median household incomes well above the Montreal metropolitan average. Established residential neighbourhoods and waterfront properties characterize the suburban landscape, while green spaces such as Cap-Saint-Jacques nature park and the Morgan Arboretum provide recreational outlets. John Abbott College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and the Macdonald Campus of McGill University are important local employers and educational institutions. Pharmaceutical and technology companies along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor contribute to the commercial base. Water quality in the surrounding lakes, commuter transit improvements to connect the West Island to downtown Montreal, and managing development pressures on remaining green spaces were key issues heading into the 2019 vote.
