Thérèse-De Blainville

Thérèse-De Blainville sits in the densely populated suburban belt north of Montreal, within the Laurentides administrative region. The riding encompasses the municipalities of Sainte-Thérèse, Blainville, Boisbriand, Rosemère, Lorraine, and Bois-des-Filion, all part of the Thérèse-De Blainville regional county municipality. Located roughly thirty-five kilometres northwest of downtown Montreal, the constituency is almost entirely suburban in character, with residential neighbourhoods, commercial strips, and light industrial zones defining its landscape.

Candidates

Louise Chabot (Bloc Québécois) — A veteran labour leader, Chabot served as president of the Centrale des syndicats du Québec, one of Quebec's largest public-sector unions, from 2012 to 2018. A self-described lifelong sovereigntist, she came out of a brief retirement to accept the Bloc nomination for the 2019 campaign.

Ramez Ayoub (Liberal) — The incumbent MP, Ayoub was born in Syria and studied economics at the Université de Montréal before building a career as a real estate broker. He spent a decade on the municipal council of Lorraine and was elected mayor of that municipality in 2009, also serving as deputy prefect of the Thérèse-De Blainville regional county municipality. He won the riding for the Liberals in the 2015 election.

Marie Claude Fournier (Conservative) — A notary by training with a master's degree in law, Fournier was known in the region as the former executive director of the Construction Association of Quebec-Laval-Laurentides.

Hannah Wolker (NDP) — Wolker carried the NDP banner in the riding.

Normand Beaudet (Green Party) — Beaudet represented the Green Party of Canada.

Désiré Mounanga ran for the People's Party of Canada, Alain Lamontagne stood for the Rhinoceros Party, and Andy Piano ran as an independent.

About the Riding

The municipalities composing Thérèse-De Blainville are classic commuter suburbs, with residents travelling to Montreal via Autoroute 15 or the Exo commuter rail network's Saint-Jérôme line. Sainte-Thérèse, the oldest of the communities, is home to Cégep Lionel-Groulx, a significant local institution. Blainville and Boisbriand have experienced rapid residential growth in recent decades, while Lorraine is one of Quebec's wealthiest municipalities. Bois-des-Filion borders the Rivière des Mille-Îles to the south.

Transportation infrastructure — particularly highway congestion on Autoroute 15 and commuter rail capacity — remained a persistent concern for residents dependent on efficient links to Montreal. The riding had been won by the Liberals in 2015, but heading into the 2019 election, the Bloc's resurgence under Yves-François Blanchet's leadership was testing Liberal strength across suburban Quebec. The contest between the experienced union leader Chabot and the sitting Liberal MP Ayoub became a barometer of the Bloc's ability to recapture suburban north-shore seats.
