About the Riding
North Kildonan is a well-established residential area with a mix of older bungalows and newer subdivisions, while The Maples is one of Winnipeg's fastest-growing neighbourhoods, home to significant Filipino, South Asian, and other immigrant communities. West St. Paul and East St. Paul are semi-rural municipalities popular with commuters working in the city. Garden City Shopping Centre and other retail corridors provide commercial employment. The riding had been held by Conservative Joy Smith from 2004 to 2015, and the 2015 race was closely watched as a bellwether for Liberal fortunes in Winnipeg, with health care funding, immigration policy, and infrastructure investment among the key issues.
