Elmwood—Transcona sits in the northeastern corner of Winnipeg, encompassing the working-class neighbourhoods of Elmwood, Transcona, East Kildonan, and part of North Kildonan. Transcona was founded in 1912 as a railway town built around the Grand Trunk Pacific and National Transcontinental Railway repair shops, and the CN Rail yards remain a defining feature of the community's identity. The riding has deep roots in organized labour and has alternated between the NDP and Conservatives over its history.
Candidates
Daniel Blaikie (NDP) — A trained electrician and the son of Bill Blaikie, who had represented the riding and its predecessors as an NDP MP from 1979 to 2008. The younger Blaikie held a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and history from the University of Winnipeg and a Master of Arts in philosophy from Concordia University before entering the skilled trades.
Lawrence Toet (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, elected in 2011. Born to Dutch immigrant parents, Toet had been a partner at Premier Printing, a family-owned business in Transcona, for 25 years before entering politics. He served on the House of Commons transportation committee during his term.

About the Riding
Elmwood, on the east side of the Red River, comprises localized neighbourhoods including Glenelm, Chalmers, Talbot-Grey, and East Elmwood. Transcona's character was shaped by the CN shops, which opened in 1913 at a cost of $6 million and at their peak employed thousands. Though railway employment has declined, the shops still operate and the Transcona Museum preserves the community's rail heritage, including locomotive CN 2747. The riding's population is predominantly working and middle class, with manufacturing, transportation, retail, and health care as leading employment sectors. The 2015 contest was among the closest in the country, with Blaikie prevailing over Toet by just 61 votes — the narrowest margin of victory for any MP elected that year.
