Simcoe North occupies the northern and eastern portions of Simcoe County, anchored by the city of Orillia on the narrows between Lakes Couchiching and Simcoe. The riding extends northwest to the twin harbourside towns of Midland and Penetanguishene on Georgian Bay, encompasses the resort municipalities of Severn and Ramara, and reaches into the rolling terrain of Oro-Medonte. Christian Island, home to the Beausoleil First Nation in Georgian Bay, also falls within the riding's boundaries.
Candidates
Bruce Stanton (Conservative) — Born in Orillia, Stanton was seeking a fourth consecutive term. Before entering politics he ran Bayview Wildwood Resort, a family tourism business on Sparrow Lake that had been in operation since 1884. He served as a councillor for the Township of Severn and sat on the boards of Resorts Ontario, the Tourism Association of Canada, and the Orillia Community Futures Development Corporation. In Parliament, he served as Assistant Deputy Chair of Committees of the Whole.
Liz Riley (Liberal) — Riley was the former president and CEO of Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, bringing extensive health care administration experience to the campaign. She mounted a strong challenge to Stanton, positioning herself as a community leader with deep institutional knowledge of the riding's health and social services sector.
Richard Banigan (NDP) — Banigan operated a publishing business in the region and was making his third run at the federal seat for the NDP. He was a familiar presence on the local political scene, having built a base of support through successive campaigns.
Peter Stubbins (Green Party) — Stubbins carried the Green Party standard in Simcoe North, advocating for environmental protection in a riding defined by its waterways and natural areas.
About the Riding
Simcoe North's economy rests on tourism, health care, manufacturing, and agriculture. Orillia, with a population of roughly 31,000, functions as a regional service centre, home to a casino, the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, and the Ontario Provincial Police headquarters. Midland and Penetanguishene anchor the riding's western edge, where the Martyrs' Shrine and Sainte-Marie among the Hurons draw heritage tourists, and where the former naval and military establishments lend Penetanguishene a distinct francophone flavour. Cottage country along Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching and the Trent-Severn Waterway fuels a seasonal tourism economy that swells the riding's population each summer. By 2015, concerns over health care access in rural communities, the state of Highway 11 infrastructure, and the economic future of smaller towns were recurring themes. Stanton's long tenure and community roots made Simcoe North a reliably Conservative seat, though Riley's profile as a hospital CEO gave the Liberals their most competitive showing in years.
