About the Riding

Simcoe—Grey's economy is shaped by two forces: agriculture in the south and tourism in the north. The Alliston area is home to a Honda manufacturing plant that employs thousands of workers and anchors the region's industrial base. Collingwood and the Blue Mountains attract skiers and cottagers year-round, while Wasaga Beach—the longest freshwater beach in the world—draws summer visitors from across southern Ontario. Farming operations, particularly potato and grain production, dominate the townships between these population centres. By 2015, growth pressures from the Greater Toronto Area were pushing development northward along the Highway 400 corridor, straining local infrastructure and prompting debates over land-use planning. The riding had been Conservative territory since its creation, and the 2015 contest unfolded against a national backdrop of debate over the niqab and cultural accommodation policies that drew particular attention to the incumbent's cabinet portfolio.
