Scarborough North

Scarborough North was a newly created riding for the 2015 election, carved from portions of the former Scarborough—Rouge River constituency. It spans the northeastern quadrant of Scarborough in the City of Toronto, stretching from Steeles Avenue and the Markham border in the north toward the Rouge River in the east, encompassing the neighbourhoods of Agincourt East, Milliken East, Malvern, and Morningside Heights.

Candidates

Shaun Chen (Liberal) — A Toronto District School Board trustee representing Ward 21 since 2006, Chen was elected chair of the board in 2014. He attended Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute and studied at the University of Toronto. He resigned from the school board on August 5, 2015, to pursue the Liberal nomination in the newly established riding.

Ravinder Malhi (Conservative) — Malhi was a business owner and community activist in Scarborough who carried the Conservative standard in the new riding, seeking to build a base in a constituency with no incumbent.

Rathika Sitsabaiesan (NDP) — The incumbent MP from the former Scarborough—Rouge River riding, Sitsabaiesan was first elected in the 2011 NDP wave. She held a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University and a Master's in industrial relations from Queen's University, and had worked at the Ontario Labour Relations Board before entering Parliament. She served as the NDP critic on various files during the 41st Parliament.

Eleni MacDonald (Green Party) — MacDonald ran for the Green Party in this new riding, advocating for environmental sustainability in one of the most densely populated parts of Scarborough.

About the Riding

As a brand-new constituency, Scarborough North had no prior electoral history, though much of its territory had been represented by the NDP's Sitsabaiesan since 2011. The riding encompasses some of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the country. Malvern, in the riding's eastern section, is home to more than sixty cultural communities and one of the highest concentrations of young people in Toronto. Public transit remained a critical concern, as residents in this part of Scarborough often faced long commutes on overcrowded bus routes to reach the nearest subway stations. Community safety, youth programming, and affordable housing were also key issues in a riding where many families lived in high-density apartment complexes. The riding drew significant attention as a test of whether the NDP could hold its 2011 gains in suburban Toronto or whether the Liberal surge would reclaim the seat.
