Oakville North—Burlington

Created during the 2012 federal redistribution, Oakville North—Burlington combined the northern portion of the town of Oakville, above Upper Middle Road, with a slice of northeastern Burlington in the Regional Municipality of Halton. The riding was contested for the first time in the 2015 election, having been carved largely from the former riding of Halton.

Candidates

Pam Damoff (Liberal) — An Oakville town councillor since 2010, Damoff had spent twenty-seven years in financial and investment banking before becoming a self-employed consultant. She was known locally for her advocacy on active transportation and cycling infrastructure, and chaired both the Oakville Terry Fox Run and the Oakville Santa Claus Parade. She was acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in May 2015 after the original nominee, Ward 6 Councillor Max Khan, passed away in March 2015.

Effie Triantafilopoulos (Conservative) — Born in Greece and raised in Toronto, Triantafilopoulos held a Master of Laws in international trade and competition law from Osgoode Hall Law School. Her career in the federal public service included positions as chief of staff to ministers at the departments of Industry, Treasury Board, and External Affairs and International Trade, and she served as deputy director of the Summits Management Office during Canada's hosting of the 2010 G8 and G20 summits. She had also served as CEO of Save the Children Canada.

Janice Best (NDP) — A graduate of McMaster University and the National Labour College in Maryland, Best had spent her career in labour relations with the Office and Professional Employees' International Union, where she served as Ontario national vice-president for fourteen years.

David Clement also ran for the Libertarian Party.

About the Riding

The northern half of Oakville and the adjacent portion of Burlington formed a landscape of newer suburban subdivisions, corporate office parks, and retail centres linked by the Queen Elizabeth Way and Highway 403. The riding's population had grown steadily through residential development. Major employers included the headquarters operations of several national corporations, and the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital — which opened in late 2015 — became a significant health care and employment anchor. Halton Region's public and Catholic school systems served a large family-oriented population, and local concerns heading into the election centred on commuter transportation, development pressures, and the balance between suburban growth and conservation of remaining green spaces.
