Created through the 2012 federal redistribution, this riding brought together the rural Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville with the northeastern reaches of the rapidly growing City of Markham. The constituency spans a striking geographic contrast — from the heritage main street of Stouffville and the surrounding farmland of the Oak Ridges Moraine to the suburban subdivisions and commercial corridors of eastern Markham, east of Highway 48.

About the Riding
Markham—Stouffville sits at the intersection of suburban expansion and rural preservation. The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, with its historic main street and surrounding agricultural land, contrasts sharply with the condominium towers and commercial plazas of Markham's eastern neighbourhoods. The Oak Ridges Moraine, a geologically significant glacial ridge that supplies groundwater to much of southern Ontario, runs through the northern portion of the riding and was the subject of ongoing debate about development pressures. Markham Stouffville Hospital serves as the riding's principal health-care institution. Rapid population growth — driven by immigration and new housing construction — placed sustained pressure on local transit, schools, and infrastructure, making commuter congestion on Highway 404 and local road networks a central concern heading into the 2015 election.
