Sherbrooke

Sherbrooke sits at the junction of the Saint-François and Magog rivers in the heart of Quebec's Eastern Townships, roughly 150 kilometres east of Montreal. The riding encompasses the city proper along with the borough of Lennoxville, home to Bishop's University. With a population anchored by two universities — the francophone Université de Sherbrooke and anglophone Bishop's — the riding carries a distinct post-secondary character that shapes its economy and demographics.

Candidates

Pierre-Luc Dusseault (NDP) — First elected in 2011 at age 19, Dusseault had become the youngest person ever to sit in the Canadian House of Commons. A student of applied politics at Université de Sherbrooke and co-founder of the campus NDP club, he spent his first parliamentary term chairing the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics. He sought a second mandate as one of the NDP's remaining Quebec standard-bearers.

Thomas Allen (Liberal) — Allen ran as the Liberal candidate in a riding the Liberals had not held since the 1980s, seeking to capitalize on growing Liberal momentum across Quebec.

Caroline Bouchard (Bloc Québécois) — A former journalist who had worked at the regional daily La Tribune and later in communications for Alcan in Paris, Bouchard was designated as the Bloc's candidate after the early election call prevented a local nomination contest.

Marc Dauphin (Conservative) — A military physician and emergency medicine specialist, Dauphin had led the multinational hospital at Kandahar Airfield during the Afghanistan mission. He later authored the book Combat Doctor about his wartime medical experiences and taught emergency medicine at both Université Laval and Université de Sherbrooke.

Sophie Malouin (Green Party) — Malouin carried the Green banner in a riding where the party had maintained a modest but consistent presence in previous elections.

About the Riding

Sherbrooke functions as the economic and administrative capital of the Eastern Townships. The Université de Sherbrooke, with its well-known cooperative education programs, and Bishop's University together employ thousands and attract students from across Quebec and beyond. The city's economy blends health services centred on the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke, light manufacturing, technology firms, and a growing tourism sector linked to the nearby lakes and ski hills around Mont-Orford. The Eastern Townships had historically been an anglophone stronghold, but by 2015 nearly ninety percent of residents reported French as their mother tongue. The riding had swung sharply to the NDP in the 2011 orange wave, and the central question heading into 2015 was whether that support would hold as Liberal momentum grew across Quebec.
