Salaberry—Suroît

Created through the 2012 federal redistribution and first contested in the 2015 election, Salaberry—Suroît draws from the former ridings of Beauharnois—Salaberry and Vaudreuil-Soulanges. The riding covers a large area along the St. Lawrence River southwest of Montreal, taking in parts of the regional county municipalities of Beauharnois-Salaberry, Le Haut-Saint-Laurent, and Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

Candidates

Anne Minh-Thu Quach (NDP) — Born on August 14, 1982, in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quach earned a diploma in health sciences from the Cégep de Valleyfield and a bachelor's degree in secondary education from the Université de Sherbrooke. She taught French at École Edgar-Hébert for five years and was active in her local teachers' union executive. She was first elected in 2011 as the NDP member for Beauharnois—Salaberry, defeating the Bloc incumbent in the orange wave.

Robert Sauvé (Liberal) — Sauvé had spent years in municipal politics, including serving as mayor of Coteau-du-Lac. He won the Liberal nomination at an assembly in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, campaigning on infrastructure investment and job creation.

Claude DeBellefeuille (Bloc Québécois) — DeBellefeuille had previously served as the member of Parliament for Beauharnois—Salaberry from 2006 to 2011, when she lost to Quach during the NDP surge. The 2015 contest was a rematch between the two, with DeBellefeuille seeking to reclaim the seat for the Bloc.

Albert De Martin (Conservative) — De Martin represented the Conservatives in a riding where the party had modest support.

About the Riding

Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, the largest community in the riding, grew up around the Beauharnois Canal and the hydroelectric power generated by the drop between Lake Saint-François and Lake Saint-Louis. The Beauharnois generating station, one of Quebec's largest hydroelectric facilities, continues to anchor the regional economy alongside manufacturing and ocean shipping. Beauharnois, Les Cèdres, and Saint-Zotique round out the riding's population centres. To the south, the riding takes in the more rural and partially anglophone communities of Huntingdon, Ormstown, and Saint-Anicet. The political geography split along regional lines, with the Bloc drawing strength in the urban francophone north and the Liberals performing better in the rural anglophone south.
