Candidates
Frank Baylis (Liberal) — An engineer by education with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, Baylis had served as president of Baylis Medical Company since 1989. Under his leadership, the firm grew from a family distribution business into an internationally recognized developer and manufacturer of medical devices used in cardiac electrophysiology and structural heart procedures. In 2011, Baylis and his business partner received the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in health services for Quebec.
Valérie Assouline (Conservative) — A lawyer and businesswoman, Assouline was also a city councillor in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. She focused her campaign on supporting West Island families facing food insecurity and on helping local small businesses.
Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe (NDP) — The incumbent MP since 2011, Blanchette-Lamothe had served as the NDP's opposition critic for seniors and later for citizenship and immigration during her first term in the House of Commons.
Natalie Laplante (Bloc Québécois) — Laplante represented the Bloc Québécois in a riding where the sovereignty movement had limited appeal given the West Island's large anglophone and allophone populations.
About the Riding
Pierrefonds—Dollard is a linguistically diverse suburban riding. At the time of the 2015 election, roughly thirty-seven percent of residents listed English as their mother tongue and thirty-two percent listed French, with significant communities speaking Arabic, Greek, Italian, and other languages. Dollard-des-Ormeaux, a city of about 50,000, is a largely residential municipality with a substantial immigrant population. Pierrefonds-Roxboro combines older residential areas with newer subdivisions, while L'Île-Bizard—Sainte-Geneviève retains a more semi-rural character with green spaces and waterfront properties. Local concerns in 2015 included commuter transit to downtown Montreal, flood-prone areas along the Rivière des Prairies, and the preservation of remaining green spaces on the western tip of the island.
