Candidates

Denis Lemieux (Liberal) — Born in Chicoutimi in 1964, Lemieux held a bachelor's degree in general engineering and had spent his career in industrial management positions with companies in the Saguenay region. He entered politics for the first time in this election.

Dany Morin (NDP) — The incumbent, Morin was born in 1985 and trained as a chiropractor. He won the seat during the 2011 NDP wave, defeating the Bloc Québécois incumbent Robert Bouchard. In Parliament he served on several committees and was an advocate for anti-bullying initiatives.

Élise Gauthier (Bloc Québécois) — Gauthier carried the Bloc's banner in a riding that was a party stronghold for most of the 2000s before the 2011 NDP breakthrough.

Caroline Ste-Marie (Conservative) — Ste-Marie represented the Conservatives in a race where the party drew on a modest but persistent base of support in the Quebec City–Saguenay corridor.

Dany St-Gelais ran for the Green Party.

About the Riding

The Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean region built its economy on the aluminum industry: hydroelectric dams on the Saguenay River system power smelters that are central to Canada's aluminum production, and the sector remains the industrial backbone of the area. Rio Tinto Alcan's operations in the region are among the largest employers. The La Baie borough adds a port and deepwater shipping terminal, while the Saguenay Fjord itself—a dramatic glacially carved inlet with cliffs rising more than 300 metres—is both a national park and a tourism draw. Seasonal employment in forestry, tourism, and small-scale agriculture contributes to higher-than-average unemployment, making federal employment insurance rules a sensitive topic. During the 2015 campaign, the future of aluminum-sector jobs, investment in regional transportation links, and federal support for the Saguenay port's development were prominent issues.
