Stretching along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River from the town of Montmagny eastward to the city of Rivière-du-Loup, this sprawling rural riding in eastern Quebec encompasses four regional county municipalities: Montmagny, L'Islet, Kamouraska, and Rivière-du-Loup. The district extends inland from the river to the American border, taking in farmland, forest, and small towns across the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Chaudière-Appalaches regions. The seat had been won in 2011 by NDP candidate François Lapointe by a margin of just nine votes over Conservative Bernard Généreux, a result confirmed only after a judicial recount.
Candidates
Bernard Généreux (Conservative) — An entrepreneur from La Pocatière, Généreux had served as mayor of that town before first winning the riding in a 2009 by-election. He lost the seat to Lapointe by the narrowest of margins in 2011 and was seeking to reclaim it. He held a certificate in corporate governance from Université Laval.
Marie-Josée Normand (Liberal) — Normand ran a competitive campaign as the Liberal standard-bearer in a riding that had historically leaned toward the Conservatives and the Bloc. The final result was close enough that she requested a judicial recount, which ultimately confirmed Généreux's victory by 272 votes.
François Lapointe (NDP) — The incumbent MP since his razor-thin 2011 victory, Lapointe had served as the NDP's critic for small and medium-sized businesses and for tourism.
Louis Gagnon (Bloc Québécois) — Gagnon carried the Bloc Québécois banner in this riding, campaigning on increased federal health transfers to Quebec. He had previously been a candidate for Québec Solidaire in the 2014 provincial election in the riding of Rivière-du-Loup—Témiscouata.
About the Riding
Rivière-du-Loup, the riding's largest centre with roughly 19,000 residents, serves as a regional hub for commerce, health care, and transportation, sitting at the junction of the Trans-Canada Highway and the route to New Brunswick. The town of Montmagny, known for its annual snow goose festival, anchors the western end of the riding. Agriculture—including dairy farming, maple syrup production, and mixed cropping—remains central to the local economy across all four MRCs, complemented by forestry and wood products. The proposed Energy East pipeline and the health of rural infrastructure, including rail service and broadband connectivity, were prominent concerns heading into the 2015 vote. The riding's history of extremely tight results—decided by single-digit or triple-digit margins—made it one of Quebec's most closely watched contests.
