The riding covers more than 7,600 square kilometres of largely forested Canadian Shield, stretching from the agricultural lowlands along the St. Lawrence to rugged backcountry around Lac-Beauport and Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury. Its population is overwhelmingly francophone.
The seat had a turbulent recent history. Independent MP Andre Arthur held it from 2006 to 2011 before the NDP's Elaine Michaud captured it during the orange wave.
