Simcoe North

Simcoe North stretches across the northern and eastern portions of Simcoe County in central Ontario, anchored by the city of Orillia and the towns of Midland and Penetanguishene on the southeastern shore of Georgian Bay. The riding also takes in the townships of Severn, Ramara, Oro-Medonte, Tay, and Tiny, along with Rama First Nation (Chippewas of Rama) and Christian Island (Beausoleil First Nation). Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching form much of the eastern boundary, while Georgian Bay defines the northwestern edge.

Candidates

Bruce Stanton (Conservative) — Stanton was first elected in Simcoe North in 2006 and re-elected in 2008, making 2011 his bid for a third consecutive term. Born and raised in Orillia, he was a fifth-generation operator of the family tourism business on Sparrow Lake, serving as president of Bayview Wildwood Resorts Limited. Before entering federal politics, he sat on the board of Resorts Ontario, Tourism Ontario, and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, and served as a municipal councillor in the Township of Severn from 1999 to 2003.

Richard Banigan (NDP) — Banigan was a publisher based in the Simcoe North area who ran as the NDP candidate in the riding. He was a long-time New Democrat activist in the local riding association.

Steve Clarke (Liberal) — Clarke had previously carried the Liberal banner in Simcoe North in the 2008 federal election. He was known locally in Orillia and sought to rebuild Liberal support in a riding that had trended Conservative.

Valerie Powell (Green Party) — Powell was a dedicated Green Party organizer in Simcoe North who had served on the riding association executive for over a decade. She ran for both the federal and provincial Green parties in the riding across multiple elections.

Adrian Kooger also stood as the Christian Heritage Party candidate.

About the Riding

With a population of roughly 111,000, Simcoe North is a mix of small-city services, resort country, and agricultural land. Orillia, the riding's largest urban centre with about 31,000 residents, serves as a regional hub for government services, retail, and light manufacturing. The city is also home to the Ontario Provincial Police headquarters, one of the area's largest employers. Midland and Penetanguishene, located on Georgian Bay's southern shore, have historically relied on manufacturing, marine industries, and tourism, with attractions such as Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour drawing visitors.

Tourism and seasonal recreation are central to the local economy. The Muskoka-Georgian Bay corridor brings cottage owners, boaters, and winter sports enthusiasts. Casino Rama, located on Rama First Nation land near Orillia, is a major employer with over 2,200 slot machines, gaming tables, restaurants, a 5,000-seat entertainment venue, and a 300-room hotel. Agriculture, including cash crops and livestock operations, remains important across the rural townships.

As of 2011, key local concerns included infrastructure investment for aging rural roads and bridges, protection of water quality in Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay, affordable housing pressures driven by proximity to the Greater Toronto Area, and the economic stability of the manufacturing sector in the Midland-Penetanguishene corridor, which had experienced layoffs in the preceding years.
