Alfred-Pellan

Situated in eastern Laval, the riding of Alfred-Pellan encompassed the neighbourhoods of Duvernay, Pont-Viau, Saint-François, Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, and the eastern portion of Vimont. Named after the renowned Quebec painter Alfred Pellan, the riding was renamed from Laval East upon redistribution in 2003. It sat on the north shore of the Rivière des Prairies, directly across from the Island of Montreal.

Candidates

Rosane Doré Lefebvre (NDP) — A recent graduate of the Université de Montréal, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and geography in 2010, Doré Lefebvre was an environmental activist who had worked for the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Fauna and Parks. At 26 years old, she was running in her home riding as part of the NDP's Quebec wave.

Robert Carrier (Bloc Québécois) — An engineer, political adviser, and project coordinator, Carrier had represented Alfred-Pellan since the riding's creation in 2004. Born in Montreal, he had won the seat three consecutive times and served as the Bloc's representative in this Laval riding for seven years heading into the 2011 campaign.

Angelo G. Iacono (Liberal) — A lawyer by profession, Iacono studied political science at McGill University, civil law at UQAM, and common law at the University of Ottawa. He was making his first run for federal office in 2011 as the Liberal candidate in the riding.

Pierre Lefebvre (Conservative) — Lefebvre carried the Conservative banner in the riding.

Dylan Perceval-Maxwell (Green Party) and Régent Millette (Independent) also stood as candidates.

About the Riding

Alfred-Pellan's population was approximately 105,000 as of the 2006 census, making it a densely populated suburban riding. The community was predominantly francophone, with roughly 75 percent of residents reporting French as their mother tongue, though the riding also had significant immigrant communities, particularly from Haiti, Italy, and North Africa.

The riding's neighbourhoods ranged from the older, established areas of Pont-Viau and Saint-Vincent-de-Paul along the riverfront to the newer suburban developments of Duvernay and Vimont. Saint-Vincent-de-Paul was historically notable as the site of a former federal penitentiary, which had been a major local employer before its closure. The Centre de détention de Laval (Laval Immigration Holding Centre) was also located in the riding.

Laval's economy in 2011 was driven by a mix of manufacturing, retail, and services. The riding was well connected to Montreal via the Pont Papineau-Leblanc and Pont Viau, and public transit access was a persistent local concern. Major employers in the broader Laval area included the Cité de la Santé hospital complex and various industrial parks. Housing affordability, transit infrastructure, and immigration services were key federal issues for the riding's residents heading into 2011.
