Ahuntsic

Located in the northern part of the Island of Montreal along the banks of the Rivière des Prairies, the riding of Ahuntsic took in the neighbourhoods of Ahuntsic, Bordeaux-Cartierville, and the western portion of Sault-au-Récollet within the Borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. The riding was bounded by the Rivière des Prairies to the north, Montréal-Nord to the east, Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension to the southeast, and Saint-Laurent to the southwest.

Candidates

Maria Mourani (Bloc Québécois) — A criminologist by training, Mourani held a degree in clinical criminology from the Université de Montréal and had worked as a rehabilitation consultant, professor, and parole officer. She was the author of two books on street gangs, including La face cachée des gangs de rue (2006) and Gangs de rue inc. (2009). Born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and of Lebanese descent, Mourani immigrated to Canada in 1988. She had held the Ahuntsic seat for the Bloc since winning it in the 2006 election and was re-elected in 2008. She was the first woman of Lebanese and Arab descent elected to the Canadian House of Commons.

Chantal Reeves (NDP) — Reeves carried the NDP banner in Ahuntsic during the 2011 campaign, running as part of the party's expanded Quebec slate under Jack Layton.

Noushig Eloyan (Liberal) — Born in Syria and of Armenian descent, Eloyan had a long career in Montreal municipal politics. She served on Montreal City Council from 1994 to 2009, first winning under the Vision Montreal banner in the district of Acadie. She served as chairperson of the city's executive committee from 1994 to 1998 and later as borough mayor of Ahuntsic-Cartierville until 2005.

Constantin Kiryakidis (Conservative) — Kiryakidis stood as the Conservative candidate in the riding.

Ted Kouretas (Green Party) and Jean-Olivier Berthiaume (Rhinoceros) also contested the seat.

About the Riding

Ahuntsic-Cartierville was one of Montreal's most ethnically diverse boroughs, with a population of approximately 130,000. According to the 2006 census, just over half the population reported French as their mother tongue, while more than 40 percent spoke a non-official language at home, with Arabic, Italian, and Spanish among the most common. The riding's commercial life centred on streets like Rue Fleury Ouest, known for its restaurants and independent shops, and the Marché Central shopping complex.

The area offered a mix of residential environments, from leafy single-family streets in Ahuntsic proper to the denser apartment blocks of Bordeaux-Cartierville and Nouveau-Bordeaux. The borough's 15 kilometres of waterfront along the Rivière des Prairies provided green space, including the Parc-nature de l'Île-de-la-Visitation, one of Montreal's largest nature parks. The Collège Ahuntsic, a major CEGEP, and the Sacré-Cœur Hospital were significant institutional employers.

Immigration policy, services for newcomers, and language questions were perennial federal concerns in this multicultural riding. Gang violence and public safety had also been recurring local issues, a subject on which the incumbent Mourani had built a particular profile through her criminological work.
