Income in Canada

The 2021 Census of Population measured income for the 2020 tax year — the first full year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Median total income for Canadians aged 15 and over was $39,600, but that figure averages across students, retirees, part-time workers, and full-time earners. The riding-level median total income (which aggregates all individuals in a riding) ranged from $58,153 in Papineau to $160,095 in Fort McMurray–Cold Lake — a 2.8-to-1 ratio. The income topic maps metrics including median income, low-income prevalence, the Gini coefficient of inequality, and family-type breakdowns that together reveal where Canada's economic geography concentrates wealth and disadvantage.

Median Total Income

The highest-income ridings in Canada are overwhelmingly suburban and resource-based. Fort McMurray–Cold Lake leads all ridings at $160,095 — nearly triple the national median — driven by oil sands wages that push even entry-level workers into six-figure territory. Behind it, Oakville East ($146,811), King–Vaughan ($141,249), and Oakville West ($140,184) represent the affluent commuter suburbs of western Toronto where dual-income professional households are the norm.

The lowest-income ridings split between downtown Montreal ridings (Papineau, Bourassa, Hochelaga–Rosemont-Est, Laurier–Sainte-Marie) and Atlantic Canadian ridings (Terra Nova, Acadie–Bathurst, Acadie–Annapolis). The Montreal ridings are low-income partly because of their large student and recent-immigrant populations, while the Atlantic ridings reflect genuinely depressed local economies with limited private-sector employment.

Low-Income Prevalence

Statistics Canada's low-income measure (LIM-AT) identifies individuals living below 50 percent of the national median after-tax income, adjusted for household size. Nationally, 11.1 percent of Canadians lived in low income in 2020 — down from 14.2 percent in 2015, largely due to pandemic income supports (CERB, CRB) that temporarily boosted the incomes of many lower-earning Canadians.

The highest low-income rates cluster in downtown ridings with large student and immigrant populations. Ville-Marie–Le Sud-Ouest–Île-des-Soeurs leads at 20.2 percent, followed by Laurier–Sainte-Marie (17.5%) and Outremont (15.9%). These are not necessarily "poor" ridings — Outremont includes one of Montreal's wealthiest neighbourhoods — but they contain large pockets of students and recent immigrants who report low individual incomes.

The lowest low-income ridings are in suburban Quebec and eastern Ontario: Montmorency–Charlevoix and Portneuf–Jacques-Cartier (both 1.9%) and Pierre-Boucher–Les Patriotes–Verchères (2.0%). These are middle-class family ridings with few students and strong employment in the federal public service or Quebec's manufacturing sector.

Income Inequality (Gini Coefficient)

The Gini coefficient measures income inequality from 0 (perfect equality) to 1 (all income to one person). Canada's national Gini was approximately 0.32 in 2020. The riding-level range runs from 0.24 (Charlesbourg–Haute-Saint-Charles, Winnipeg North) to 0.47 (University–Rosedale).

The most unequal ridings are in Canada's wealthiest urban cores: University–Rosedale (0.47), Ville-Marie–Le Sud-Ouest (0.46), and Vancouver Quadra (0.46). These ridings combine extreme wealth (Rosedale, Westmount, Shaughnessy) with large low-income populations (students, social housing, recent immigrants). The inequality is driven not by the absence of wealth but by its concentration alongside poverty.

The most equal ridings are in Quebec City's suburbs (Charlesbourg, 0.24), Winnipeg's working-class north (0.24), and smaller Quebec communities where the income distribution is compressed around the middle class. Quebec's lower income inequality reflects both its more generous social transfers and its relatively compressed private-sector wage structure.

Family Income by Type

Family structure is the strongest predictor of household income in Canada. Couples with children had a national median income of $110,190 in 2020, compared with $59,730 for lone-parent families and $36,200 for unattached individuals.

The geographic pattern for couple-family income follows the overall median closely: Toronto–St. Paul's ($209,361) and Eglinton–Lawrence ($202,409) lead, reflecting the professional dual-income households of midtown Toronto. For lone-parent families, the highest incomes are in Ottawa-area ridings (Carleton, $100,157; Orléans, $99,103) — where federal public-service employment provides stable, well-paid work regardless of family structure.

The lowest lone-parent incomes are in Newfoundland (Terra Nova, $50,888) and northern Indigenous ridings (Desnethé–Missinippi, $54,524), where limited formal employment makes single-parent households especially vulnerable.

8Brampton East$134,340
9Northwest Territories$133,076
10Vaughan–Woodbridge$132,926

Fort McMurray's dominance reflects resource-sector wages: even median incomes are pushed sky-high by the oil sands. The seven Ontario ridings in positions 2–10 are all in the affluent western GTA or Ottawa exurbs, where dual-income professional households are the norm. The Northwest Territories — like Fort McMurray — benefits from resource extraction and a large federal government presence that pays northern isolation premiums.

7Sherbrooke$62,412
8Acadie–Bathurst$62,493
9Acadie–Annapolis$62,513
10Madawaska–Restigouche$62,554

Five of the ten lowest-income ridings are in Quebec — but for different reasons. The Montreal ridings (Papineau, Bourassa, Hochelaga, Laurier) have large immigrant, student, and social-housing populations. Sherbrooke includes a major university. The Atlantic ridings (Terra Nova, Acadie–Bathurst, Acadie–Annapolis, Madawaska–Restigouche) reflect genuinely weak local economies with limited private-sector employment and aging populations.

8Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount0.40
9Eglinton–Lawrence0.40
10Calgary Confederation0.39

Every riding on this list contains both extreme wealth and significant poverty within its boundaries. University–Rosedale, for instance, includes the mansions of Rosedale and the social housing of St. James Town — one of the densest and lowest-income neighbourhoods in Canada — within a few blocks of each other. The Gini coefficient captures this internal contrast better than median income alone.

6Terrebonne0.25
7Gatineau0.25
8Calgary McKnight0.25
9Elmwood–Transcona0.25
10Brampton–Chinguacousy Park0.25

The most equal ridings are socially homogeneous — either solidly middle-class suburbs (Charlesbourg, Lévis, Terrebonne, Brampton) or working-class communities where few residents earn very high incomes (Winnipeg North, Elmwood–Transcona). Quebec's compressed wage distribution places four of its ridings in the top ten. The gap between the most and least equal ridings (0.24 vs. 0.47) is substantial — nearly doubling — and maps cleanly onto the difference between homogeneous suburbs and mixed-income urban cores.

Postal Code (FSA) Rankings

FSA-level data reveals extremes that riding boundaries average away. At the postal code level, the richest and poorest areas can be just a few blocks apart.

8M5MToronto (Bedford Park), ON$164,000
9L3LStouffville, ON$162,000
10S4LWhite City, SK$164,000

Westmount (H3Y) is Canada's richest postal code at $240,000 median income — an enclave of Anglo-Montreal wealth surrounded by lower-income francophone neighbourhoods. Fort McMurray claims two spots (T9K, T9J), confirming that the oil sands create broadly shared high incomes rather than concentrated wealth. The suburban Ontario codes (L0J King City, L3L Stouffville) and prairie acreages (T3Z, R4G, S4L) represent the exurban professional class.

Montréal's H3A (the McGill University neighbourhood) is Canada's lowest-income postal code — but not its poorest community. The figure is depressed by thousands of students reporting minimal taxable income. The Winnipeg codes (R3B, R3A, R3C) represent genuinely disadvantaged inner-city neighbourhoods with high rates of homelessness and social-service dependency. The small Quebec cities (Drummondville, Shawinigan, Iberville) reflect aging industrial towns where well-paying manufacturing jobs have disappeared.
