The tolerant NDP

Libby Davies voices her opinion on Israel:

This drew strong condemnation from Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper,

and from Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae,

“The comments of Ms. Davies are more than just a ‘serious mistake,’ as the Leader of the NDP now maintains. To deny the State of Israel’s right to exist and to propose an international campaign of boycotts, divestments and sanctions against a legitimate member of the world community for over sixty years is to reveal a level of hostility and ignorance that is truly breathtaking.

“These are not the off-the-cuff ramblings of any ill-informed or biased person. Ms. Davies is the Deputy Leader of a political party that aspires to reflect and represent the views of Canada on the international stage. In this role, fully cognizant of her responsibilities, she stated that Israel has been occupying territories since 1948, the year of its independence. The logical implication of these comments is that Israel has no right to exist.

“She called this ‘the longest occupation in the world.’ That is simply untrue, and reflects a complete disregard for the facts.

“This is a position that is more than just ‘unacceptable.’ This rhetoric is responsible for more than ‘confusion,’ and an ‘inadvertent error,” as Ms. Davies now suggests.

“The appropriate decision, given her stature and responsibilities with the NDP, is for Mr. Layton to ask for her resignation as Deputy Leader and for Ms. Davies to issue an apology to all Canadians. Nothing short of that will do.”

The referenced “Helen Thomas moment”:

In related NDP tolerance news, NDP MP calls a Catholic denomination “creepy”,

UPDATE: B’nai Brith unsurprisingly calls for Davies to be sacked.

“B’nai Brith Canada is calling on NDP leader Jack Layton to take action against Libby Davies for her outrageous remarks against the Jewish State, and by extension the Jewish people,” said Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B’nai Brith Canada. “The fact that Davies made her comments at an anti-Israel rally held in front of a Jewish-owned business speaks volumes to the fact that anti-Israel agitators in Canada are blurring the lines between criticism of Israeli policies and antisemitism.

“Both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Liberal Party foreign affairs critic Bob Rae have justifiably called for the resignation of Ms. Davies. NDP leader Jack Layton has gone on the record today stating that her remarks are not the policy of his party – if that is the case, then Mr. Layton should take the next step and relieve Davies of her leadership positions in the party.”

Well the fact is you’re wrong – I’m a high school drop out and I know this history – the fact is Davies is simply voicing the opinions of her party – without a doubt – Jack Layton himself has made comments that legitimize Islamist activity.

no surprise, there is no group more against free speech, democracy, tolerance than the liberal fascist left or progressives in Canada and the US

Cute, but all this shows is an MP who doesn't know her history. She clearly flails when asked about dates, the green zone, etc. Do you really get the impression she knew the significance of the two dates offered to her?

I have difficulty buying the argument that Davies knew the relevance of the 1948 and 1967 dates. Should anyone claiming to have an opinion about the Arab-Israeli conflict be embarrassed not to know this history? Yes. Is she ignorant on the basic facts of the matter? Yes. But does this video show that Libby Davies is deliberately questioning Israel's right to exist? No.

    She's ignorant, but not intolerant.

Lets not forget that this is the same party that the liberals back in 2008 were ready to lead a coalition government with. With the NDP having seats at the government table.

As a person in government she should know that you should never give an opinion on a matter that you have not studied through. i am sorry but i do not want anybody representing me as a canadian who believes that has the right to give a public opinion without the facts.

I notice how Davies applauded her leader defender her in QP. Bad optics. Certainly she doesn't want to look defeated… but to applaud as she did? Highly inapproriate and make the apology look insincere.

I will, however, have a good chuckle the next time she calls for some Conservative minister or MP to resign.

Libby's partner has a very 'interesting' website

It's interesting that you've chosen to display your contempt for a world religion in a thread about tolerance.

Yes, or the next time Jack Layton calls for anyone to resign.

“Guest” (that's like posting Anonymous): “She's ignorant, but not intolerant.”

    YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING.

The Israel-Palestinian conflict is front and centre on the world stage, so for the Deputy Leader of a federal political party to reveal the ignorance she has, compounded by her solution — to a problem she is ignorant of (and, yes, you could tell by the look on her face that she was clueless about the questions put to her WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN HER CUE TO ST*U) — that “Israel has to remove itself … and drop the siege of Gaza” is more than embarrassing for her, it shows her utter incompetence as a politician — and her intolerance for Israel and its right to exist.

Libby Davies should resign and if she doesn't of her own accord, then Jack Layton needs to ask her to resign. I'd like to see some accountability on the part of the NDP on this issue — or, frankly, on any issue, rather than their incessant playing at politics. Someone as dumb and as brainwashed as Libby Davies should not be sitting in Parliament being paid by the Canadian taxpayer.

And, BTW, here's the skinny on who was aboard the ship the Israeli soldiers boarded — and who owns the ship. (How come Libby Davies doesn't know this?)

    [begin quote]

Sure, there were many useful idiots on the decks — pro-Palestinian activists from Western nations who had been included merely because they made good PR decoys. And, yes, most of them probably swallowed whole the bumph flotilla organizers were selling–that the exercise was merely an attempt to run Israel’s blockade of Gaza ports and bring food, medicine, clothing, toys, etc. to the poor, starving residents.

But the real passengers were 40 operatives from the Turkish Islamist organization, the IHH, which has close ties to the ruling AKP party and directly to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, according to the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center. It has also been reported that the ship on which the deadly commando raid took place, the Mavi Maramara, was purchased by the IHH from a company owned by the AKP with money furnished by the Turkish government.

You're right, Wilson, that's some interesting site. Wear sunglasses to view Davies' psychedelic getup. I guess she's gussied up for the Gay Pride Parade, in all the colours of the rainbow.

What a sight to behold! Huzza! Huzza!

(Libby Davies, Helen Thomas… no I'm not impressed. Not only for the extremity and one-sidedness of their views, but also for the lack of any political instinct about what to say in front of an open mic. Fail. )

Re the Gaza flotilla – you've linked to an editorial… someone's opinion. There are other opinions out there too.

IHH is not a terrorist organization, in and of itself. Yes they are sympathetic to, and have provided aid to Palestinians, including to Hamas. So has most of the Islamic world. Calling IHH members “operatives from the Turkish Islamist organization” is an inflammatory statement, like calling B'nai Brith a “Zionist organization” .

Anyway, we're not going to solve the Middle East situation in this tiny conservative backwater. Whatever your feeling on the flotilla, it has succeeded in drawing renewed attention to the blockade of Gaza, and Israel is now responding to the pressure by easing the blockade.

It's a pity that Israel couldn't find a way to do this without being pressured. People did not need to die (in international waters, BTW) for this to happen.

Hoping no one bursts any of the balloons behind Libby, it'll take them all to get her launched.

Why does Jack Layton want the world to acquiesce to the Taliban? Is it because he believes any force that hates Jews, Americans and Christians cannot be all bad.
