Cannington anchors the extreme southeast corner of Saskatchewan, a region built on grain and mixed farming supplemented by oil production and energy services. The constituency was expanded through redistribution to include communities such as Kipling, Kennedy, and Langbank along its northern boundary, adding to a riding already centred on towns like Moosomin, Redvers, and Oxbow. Incumbent MLA Daryl Harrison, first elected in 2020, was acclaimed as the Saskatchewan Party's candidate, underscoring the party's dominance in what is arguably the most conservative seat in the province. Five candidates ultimately contested the riding, the highest number in any southeast Saskatchewan constituency, though the outcome was never seriously in doubt.
Candidates
Daryl Harrison (Saskatchewan Party) — Born in the Redvers Hospital and a lifelong resident of southeast Saskatchewan, Harrison spent more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, including roles as a production foreman and account manager with Baker Hughes. He operates a cattle ranch with his wife Cheryl and previously served as a rural municipal councillor, volunteer firefighter, and school division trustee for the Souris-Moose Mountain and South East Cornerstone divisions. During his first term he served as Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Resources.
Dianne Twietmeyer (NDP) — Originally from Australia, Twietmeyer moved to Saskatchewan roughly 45 years ago with her husband, who was raised on a farm south of Oxbow. She taught on White Bear First Nation for four decades and was active in community life, serving on local boards, owning a small business, and playing in the Oxbow-based rock band Downwind. She also ran for the NDP in Cannington in the 2020 election.
Michelle Krieger (Buffalo Party) — Krieger owns and operates a business coaching, consulting, and bookkeeping firm in Alameda. She serves as a town councillor in Alameda and sits on the Southeast Healthcare Recruitment and Retention committee and the local Saskatchewan Health Authority liaison committee. She was also acclaimed as mayor of Alameda in the fall of 2024.
Barbara Helfrick (Saskatchewan United Party) — A registered nurse with 36 years of healthcare experience, Helfrick also worked as a mental health counsellor for Southeast Regional College, where she created policies and guidelines for mental health services.
Natalie Lund-Clysdale (Green Party) received a small share of the vote.
Local Issues
Healthcare service disruptions were the dominant local concern in Cannington. The Redvers Health Centre's emergency and acute care services faced chronic closures throughout 2023 and 2024, while the nearby Galloway Health Centre in Oxbow experienced similar disruptions. The result was that residents in the southeast corner of the province were sometimes left without any nearby emergency care, forcing long drives to Regina. Provincial data showed that Saskatchewan experienced nearly 1,000 health facility service disruptions between 2019 and 2023, and the southeast was among the hardest-hit regions.
The energy sector shaped much of the riding's economic conversation. Oil production is distributed throughout the constituency, and energy service companies provide significant off-farm employment. Harrison noted during the campaign that drilling activity had increased across the riding, though operators and workers alike wanted to see more. Fuel costs and carbon pricing remained flashpoint issues in a constituency where virtually every livelihood depends on transportation and heavy equipment.
Agriculture remained the backbone of the local economy, and producers faced the familiar volatility of commodity prices alongside rising input costs for fertilizer, seed, and machinery. Drought conditions in recent seasons had added to the stress on mixed farming operations, reinforcing the riding's longstanding demand for crop insurance and business risk management programs.
