Airdrie-Cochrane stretches across the rolling foothills and prairie northwest of Calgary, linking the western half of the City of Airdrie with the Town of Cochrane, the hamlet of Bearspaw, and rural portions of Rocky View County. Both Airdrie and Cochrane continued to rank among Canada's fastest-growing municipalities between 2019 and 2023, with Airdrie's population surpassing 75,000 and Cochrane pushing past 35,000 during the term. The riding's character is defined by commuter families drawn to more affordable housing within reach of Calgary's job market. Incumbent UCP MLA Peter Guthrie, first elected in 2019, sought re-election after serving as Minister of Energy and later Minister of Infrastructure under Premier Danielle Smith.
Candidates
Peter Guthrie (United Conservative)* — A chemical engineer and Cochrane resident, Guthrie operated the Dumaresq Brothers Ranch in Consort and a Mr. Lube franchise in Calgary before entering politics. First elected in 2019, he was appointed Minister of Energy in October 2022 when Danielle Smith became premier, and was later reassigned to the Infrastructure portfolio ahead of the 2023 election.
Shaun Fluker (NDP) — An associate professor of law at the University of Calgary and Cochrane resident, Fluker practiced law beginning in 1996 and joined the U of C law faculty in 2007. He served as Executive Director of the university's Public Interest Law Clinic until 2019 and focused his academic work on public policy, environmental law, and resource management.
Local Issues
Transportation infrastructure remained the dominant concern in Airdrie-Cochrane between 2019 and 2023. The long-awaited Highway 1A and Highway 22 interchange in Cochrane, carrying more than 29,000 vehicles daily, finally moved from planning to construction in 2023 under a $110-million provincial contract awarded to EllisDon. The years of delay had been a persistent source of frustration for Cochrane commuters and businesses. In Airdrie, the 40th Avenue interchange project similarly required provincial funding commitments to address congestion created by the city's rapid population growth.
Healthcare access was a pressing concern in both communities. Airdrie remained one of Alberta's largest cities without a hospital, with its population exceeding 80,000 people relying on a 24-hour urgent care centre and Calgary facilities for acute care. The 2023 provincial budget allocated $3 million for planning a North Calgary-Airdrie regional health centre, but residents expressed frustration at the pace of progress. School capacity was strained in both Airdrie and Cochrane, with enrolment growth outpacing new construction. The Alberta Sovereignty Act, introduced by Premier Smith in late 2022, was also debated in the riding, with supporters viewing it as a necessary assertion of provincial autonomy and critics warning it could deter investment.
