Edmonton-South West sits in the southwestern corner of the city, a stretch of newer residential development framed by Whitemud Drive to the north and the municipal boundary to the west and south. The riding includes the master-planned communities of Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick, and Glenridding, areas that saw sustained construction activity throughout the 2019-2023 term. The seat was held by UCP MLA Kaycee Madu, who made history in 2019 as the only UCP candidate elected within Edmonton's city limits. Madu rose quickly through cabinet, serving as Municipal Affairs Minister, Justice Minister and Solicitor General, Labour and Immigration Minister, and briefly as Deputy Premier under Danielle Smith.
Candidates
Nathan Ip (NDP) — Born in Taiwan, Ip immigrated to Canada as a child, with his parents running a restaurant in Edmonton. He served three terms as an Edmonton Public School Board trustee for Ward H beginning in 2013 and was vice-chair of the board. Professionally, Ip managed integrated program delivery at Innovate Edmonton, supporting the city's innovation community. He previously led HEADSTRONG, a national youth mental health leadership program.
Kaycee Madu (United Conservative)* — First elected in 2019, Madu was the first African-born member of a provincial cabinet in Canadian history when he was appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs. His tenure as Justice Minister ended in January 2022 when Premier Kenney removed him from the portfolio after it was revealed that Madu had phoned Edmonton's police chief following a distracted driving ticket he received in a school zone in March 2021. An independent review and subsequent Law Society of Alberta proceedings found his conduct as a lawyer fell below professional standards.
Local Issues
Edmonton-South West was among the most closely watched ridings in the 2023 election, with the NDP targeting it as a bellwether for their prospects in suburban Edmonton. The riding's western communities continued to grow between 2019 and 2023, intensifying pressure on school capacity, road networks, and transit connections.
The South Edmonton Hospital remained a key issue for residents who lacked nearby access to acute care. School overcrowding was particularly acute, with parents in the riding's growing subdivisions calling for new high school construction in the southwest. The Terwillegar Drive expansion project, which began construction in 2021, directly affected commuters in the riding, with years of construction disruption along one of the area's main arteries. Broader provincial debates over healthcare system strain, pandemic management, and affordability also shaped the race, particularly given Madu's high-profile cabinet controversies.
