Edmonton-Meadows

Edmonton-Meadows spans a cluster of southeast Edmonton communities built around the master-planned Meadows development, where residential construction, stormwater lakes, and parkland were designed together. The riding takes in Tamarack, Silver Berry, Wild Rose, Larkspur, Minchau, Bisset, Daly Grove, and Jackson Heights — a blend of established 1970s-era neighbourhoods and newer subdivisions that attracted young families and immigrant households through the 2010s and early 2020s. The constituency is among the most diverse in Alberta, with substantial South Asian and other immigrant populations. Jasvir Deol won the seat in 2019 by defeating UCP-appointed candidate Len Rhodes, and he entered the 2023 election as the incumbent seeking a second term.

Candidates

Jasvir Deol (NDP) — Born in Punjab, India, Deol immigrated to Canada in 1993 and settled in southeast Edmonton, where he built a career as an insurance broker and small business owner spanning nearly two decades. Active in community life through organizing sports tournaments, youth fundraising, and board service with several non-profits, he also held a leadership role with the Edmonton Taxi Association. He previously ran as the federal NDP candidate in Edmonton Mill Woods in 2015. In the legislature, he served as Official Opposition Critic for Multiculturalism.

Amritpal Singh Matharu (United Conservative) — Born and raised in Edmonton-Meadows, Matharu completed a bachelor of commerce at MacEwan University and works as a shop manager at TJ's Auto and Brakes & Tires. He serves as General Secretary of Gurdwara Millwoods and has been involved in community activities including fundraising for the Edmonton Food Bank and organizing the Edmonton Nagar Kirtan. He won the UCP nomination by defeating Kanwarjit Singh Sandhu.

Corinne Benson (Communist Party - Alberta) — Benson, a retired daycare worker and longtime political activist, ran as the Communist Party - Alberta candidate in the riding.

Local Issues

Transit connectivity was a defining issue for a riding situated far from Edmonton's existing LRT network. While the Valley Line southeast segment was under construction during the inter-election period, its terminus at Mill Woods Town Centre served communities adjacent to — but not within — Edmonton-Meadows. Residents in Tamarack, Silver Berry, and Larkspur relied on bus connections to the Mill Woods Transit Centre, and service frequency and coverage remained frustrations for commuters making multi-transfer journeys to downtown or other employment centres.

School capacity continued to challenge a riding that had experienced sustained residential growth. The Meadows community's family-oriented housing attracted households with school-age children at a pace that consistently outstripped available classroom space. Portable classrooms, overcrowded schools, and long bus rides to facilities in neighbouring communities were common concerns raised by parents during the campaign period. The UCP and NDP offered competing visions on school capital funding.

The riding's large immigrant population gave settlement services, language programming, and multiculturalism policy particular local salience. Deol's role as the NDP's multiculturalism critic connected directly to constituency concerns about funding for settlement organizations, anti-racism initiatives, and supports for newcomer families navigating the education and healthcare systems. The cost of living — particularly housing costs, which had risen steadily even as interest rates climbed — was felt acutely in a riding where many households carried recent mortgages on homes purchased during the area's growth boom.
