Calgary-West is a provincial electoral district covering the affluent western suburbs of Calgary, south of the Bow River. The riding includes the communities of Signal Hill, Springbank Hill, Aspen Woods, West Springs, Coach Hill, Cougar Ridge, Patterson, Discovery Ridge, Glamorgan, Glenbrook, and Christie Park. With mountain views, spacious homes, and high household incomes, Calgary-West is one of the city's most reliably conservative ridings. Mike Ellis won the seat for the Progressive Conservatives in an October 2014 by-election and was re-elected in 2015. He subsequently joined the United Conservative Party.

Local Issues
The most significant infrastructure project affecting Calgary-West during the 2015--2019 term was the construction of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road. The $1.42-billion provincial investment began preliminary work in summer 2016, with major construction commencing in spring 2017. The project involved approximately 31 kilometres of new highway with 14 interchanges, multiple bridges, and river crossings along the riding's western and southern edges. While the ring road promised to improve commuter access for residents of Springbank Hill, Discovery Ridge, and communities further west, the multi-year construction caused disruptions to local traffic patterns and raised concerns about noise and environmental impacts along the Elbow River valley.
The economic downturn was a central concern in Calgary-West, despite the riding's relative affluence. Many residents worked in senior management and professional roles in the oil and gas sector, and the prolonged slump in energy prices had led to layoffs even among high-earning professionals. The NDP government's carbon tax, introduced on January 1, 2017, was unpopular in this riding, viewed by many residents as an additional burden on an already struggling economy.
Public safety also featured in local discussions, given Ellis's background as a police officer. Concerns about property crime, rural crime in adjacent areas west of Calgary, and community policing resources were issues that the incumbent had championed during his first term. The broader debate over the NDP government's approach to crime and justice added a local dimension to the provincial conversation in this suburban riding.
