Foothills is one of Alberta's most geographically expansive federal ridings, stretching from the southern edge of Calgary southward along the Rocky Mountain foothills and eastern slopes to the United States border. The riding encompasses the towns of Okotoks, High River, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Nanton, Claresholm, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, and the Crowsnest Pass, as well as Bragg Creek, Heritage Pointe, and Waterton Lakes National Park. It also includes the Tsuu T'ina Nation, Eden Valley, and the Piikani First Nation. The landscape transitions from Calgary-region commuter suburbs in the north to ranching country, irrigated farmland, and the rugged peaks of the southern Rockies.
Candidates
John Barlow (Conservative) -- A former journalist who spent 20 years in the newspaper industry, including a stint as editor of the Western Wheel in Okotoks, Barlow holds a degree in political science. He was first elected in a 2014 by-election in the former Macleod riding, which was reconstituted as Foothills in 2015. He lives in Okotoks with his wife and three children. He has served as the Conservative shadow minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food, and Food Security under both Erin O'Toole and Pierre Poilievre.
John Bruinsma (Liberal) -- Born in southern Alberta to immigrant parents and raised on a farm, Bruinsma holds diplomas in instrumentation engineering technology, computer systems technology, and business management accounting from NAIT. He completed a 35-year career as an engineering technologist in industrial automation and controls, working on projects across the oil patch, petrochemical plants, and water treatment facilities. Now retired and living in Crowsnest Pass, he entered politics driven by concern over tariff-related economic uncertainty.
Kaitte Aurora (NDP) -- Born in Saskatoon and educated at Carleton University in space systems engineering, Aurora worked as an industrial engineer at Arnprior Aerospace and later at Lockheed Martin Canada, where they performed mechanical engineering and computational fluid dynamics work for the navy. Their policy priorities centre on environmental issues, including coal mining in the eastern slopes and renewable energy development.
Paul O'Halloran (People's Party) -- O'Halloran ran under the People's Party banner, campaigning on reduced regulation, fiscal conservatism, and personal freedoms.
Emma Hoberg (Green Party) -- Born and raised in Okotoks, Hoberg holds a degree in environmental studies and global sustainability with minors in political science and international relations. She works as the Green Party of Canada's Western Organizer and previously worked on recycling and sustainability projects in Alberta.
About the Riding
Foothills covers a remarkable diversity of terrain and economic activity. The northern end -- Okotoks, High River, and Heritage Pointe -- functions as Calgary's southern commuter belt, with rapid population growth, new housing developments, and residents who work in the city's energy, finance, and technology sectors. Okotoks, with a population approaching 35,000, has been one of Alberta's fastest-growing towns, and its growth has driven demand for expanded schools, healthcare, and transportation infrastructure.
South of Highway 2, the landscape opens into the ranching heartland of the Alberta foothills. Cattle operations, hay production, and mixed farming dominate the economy in the counties of Willow Creek and the Municipal District of Pincher Creek. The former coal-mining towns of the Crowsnest Pass -- Blairmore, Coleman, and Bellevue -- have reinvented themselves around tourism, recreation, and outdoor adventure, drawing hikers, skiers, and history enthusiasts.
Waterton Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the riding's southwestern corner, is a major tourism draw. The Tsuu T'ina Nation, west of Calgary, has pursued significant economic development including a major commercial and entertainment district along the city's ring road. Water management, coal mining policy in the eastern slopes, and agricultural trade have been persistent issues in the riding, alongside the bread-and-butter concerns of healthcare access and rural broadband connectivity. Foothills has been one of the safest Conservative seats in Alberta since the riding's creation, with Barlow routinely winning by commanding margins.
