Wellington--Halton Hills North is a sprawling riding in south-central Ontario that stretches from the historic towns of Fergus and Elora in Wellington County through the rolling farmland of Puslinch and Erin to the communities of Georgetown and Acton in Halton Hills. Veteran Conservative MP Michael Chong won his eighth consecutive term here in 2025, cementing his status as one of the longest-serving members in the House of Commons.
Candidates
Michael Chong (Conservative) -- First elected in 2004, Chong is a former cabinet minister who served as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council under Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He resigned from cabinet in 2006 over the motion to recognize Quebec as a nation. A champion of parliamentary reform, he authored the Reform Act, which strengthened the role of individual MPs. He served as the Conservative shadow minister for foreign affairs heading into the 2025 election.
Sean Carscadden (Liberal) -- A helicopter pilot with Ornge, Ontario's air ambulance service, Carscadden served twenty years as an officer and pilot in the Canadian Forces. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Oceanography from Royal Roads Military College and was active in Rotary Club projects and Indigenous reconciliation initiatives.
Liam Stiles (Green Party) -- A registered kinesiologist working in long-term care, Stiles grew up in the Guelph-Eramosa area. He campaigned on climate leadership, affordable housing, and green energy investment, arguing that Canada should position itself as a leader in clean technology.
Andrew Bascombe (NDP) -- An Acton resident who works as a low-rise home builder, Bascombe brought union experience from his years as a Unifor local chair and Aboriginal Workers of Colour representative. He previously ran for the NDP in the riding in 2019 and focused his campaign on affordability and housing.
Syl Carle (People's Party - PPC) -- The People's Party candidate in Wellington--Halton Hills North.
About the Riding
The riding is a patchwork of small-town Ontario and exurban commuter communities. Fergus and Elora attract visitors with their heritage architecture and the dramatic Elora Gorge, while Georgetown and Acton have grown as bedroom communities for the Greater Toronto Area. Agriculture remains an important part of the local economy, particularly in the rural stretches of Wellington County, though the riding's proximity to Guelph and the GTA has brought increasing development pressure.
Chong's longevity in the riding reflects his reputation as an independent-minded Conservative willing to break with party orthodoxy. His authorship of the Reform Act and his principled resignation from Harper's cabinet earned him respect across party lines. In 2025, the main contest was between Chong and Liberal challenger Carscadden, who mounted a competitive campaign but could not overcome the incumbent's deep roots in the community.
