About the Riding
Hastings--Lennox and Addington--Tyendinaga is one of eastern Ontario's largest ridings, stretching from the shores of Lake Ontario near Napanee and northern Belleville through the towns of Tweed and Madoc all the way to Hastings Highlands on the edge of Algonquin Park. The riding's vast geography encompasses fertile farmland in the south, rugged Canadian Shield terrain in the north, and small-town main streets throughout.
Agriculture is central to the riding's economy and identity. A candidates' debate focused entirely on farming issues covered topics ranging from hemp cultivation and business risk management programs to the industrial carbon tax and rural internet expansion. The carbon tax was a persistent flashpoint during the campaign, with many agricultural producers and rural residents viewing it as an unfair burden on their livelihoods.
Affordability and trust in government dominated the broader campaign debate, with the U.S.-Canada trade conflict adding urgency to concerns about small business viability and rural employment. Healthcare access -- including mental health services, doctor shortages, and travel distances to hospitals -- remained a core concern for residents spread across thousands of square kilometres of largely rural territory.
