La Pointe-de-l'Île

La Pointe-de-l'Île occupies the eastern tip of the Island of Montreal, where the Rivière des Prairies meets the St. Lawrence River. The riding encompasses the city of Montréal-Est, the neighbourhood of Pointe-aux-Trembles in the Borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, and portions of Longue-Pointe and Mercier-Est in the Borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Created in 2003 from parts of three former ridings, it is a predominantly francophone district — over 83% of residents speak French as a mother tongue — with smaller communities of Spanish, Creole, Arabic, and Italian speakers.

Candidates

Mario Beaulieu (Bloc Québécois) — Born in Sherbrooke in 1959, Beaulieu served as the 80th president of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste of Montreal from 2009 to 2014 and was a prominent spokesman for the Mouvement Québec français. He led the Bloc Québécois as interim leader and party president between 2014 and 2019, and has represented La Pointe-de-l'Île since 2015 — the only Bloc MP elected on the Island of Montreal in that cycle.

Jonas Fadeu (Liberal) — Fadeu carried the Liberal banner in La Pointe-de-l'Île in 2021, mounting a challenge in a riding where the party had historically drawn strong support before the sovereignty movement's resurgence in eastern Montreal.

Alexandre Vallerand (NDP) — Vallerand ran as the New Democratic Party candidate, campaigning on affordability issues including caps on telecommunications pricing and a consumer bill of rights for phone and internet services.

Massimo Anania (Conservative) — Anania stood as the Conservative Party candidate in the riding, offering a centre-right alternative in a district where the Conservatives have traditionally drawn modest support.

About the Riding

Eastern Montreal has long been considered a heartland of the Quebec sovereignty movement, and La Pointe-de-l'Île reflects that tradition. The riding was once regarded as among the Bloc Québécois's safest seats, though voters briefly turned to the NDP during the 2011 "orange wave" before returning to the Bloc fold.

Pointe-aux-Trembles, the riding's largest neighbourhood, traces its roots to 1674, making it one of the oldest settlements on the island. It was an independent municipality until its annexation by Montreal in 1982. Montréal-Est, a small industrial city within the riding's boundaries, grew around oil refineries and petrochemical plants established in the early twentieth century.

The riding's residential areas are largely working-class and middle-class, with modest single-family homes and duplexes predominating. Proximity to the St. Lawrence and the Rivière des Prairies provides waterfront green spaces, and the area is served by several bus routes connecting to the Pointe-aux-Trembles commuter rail station. Language policy, protection of French, and the cost of living remain central concerns for voters in this staunchly francophone corner of Montreal.
