Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou

Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou is the largest federal riding in Quebec and one of the largest in Canada, encompassing more than half the province's total landmass. The district stretches from the mining towns of the Abitibi region in the south through the boreal forests of the James Bay lowlands to the Arctic tundra of Nunavik in the far north. Major population centres include Val-d'Or, Chibougamau, Lebel-sur-Quévillon, Matagami, and the Inuit community of Kuujjuaq. Approximately 38 percent of the riding's population is Indigenous, including roughly 18,000 Cree represented by the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) and a significant Inuit population across Nunavik's 14 northern villages.

Candidates

Sylvie Bérubé (Bloc Québécois) was the incumbent, first elected in 2019 as the first woman to represent the riding. Before entering politics, she worked for more than 30 years in the health-care system at the CISSS of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, holding roles in information technology and human resources at Val-d'Or Hospital. She served as the Bloc's critic for family, children, and social development.

Lise Kistabish (Liberal) is Anishinaabe from Pikogan First Nation. She served as general director of Pikogan from 1995 to 2012 and held the role of director of training, employment, and social development in her community. Housing, access to clean drinking water, and climate change were among her priority issues.

Steve Corriveau (Conservative) is originally from Val-d'Or. Before entering politics, he worked in the tourism industry in Quebec City for several years. In 1995, he gained attention for traversing Canada on inline skates to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. He was inspired to seek the nomination after Erin O'Toole became Conservative leader.

Pauline Lameboy (NDP) is a Cree woman from Chisasibi who served five years as a councillor for the Cree Nation of Chisasibi. She co-founded a cancer support organization in her community and worked with an organization assisting Cree women. Home ownership and improved cellular network coverage were among her key priorities.

About the Riding

The economy of this vast riding is dominated by natural resource extraction. Gold, copper, and zinc mining drive the Abitibi sector, with Val-d'Or serving as the region's principal commercial and services hub. Further north, Glencore's Raglan nickel and copper mine near Salluit has operated for over 20 years, shipping ore to its smelter in Sudbury, Ontario. Forestry and hydroelectric generation are also significant employers throughout the boreal zone.

The riding's Indigenous communities exercise considerable autonomy. Under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, the Cree Nation Government controls land use, hunting, mining, fishing, education, health, social services, and economic development across Eeyou Istchee. Nunavik's Inuit communities are governed through the Kativik Regional Government and Makivik Corporation.

As of the 2021 campaign, key local issues included chronic housing shortages in Indigenous communities, unreliable telecommunications and internet service across the north, access to health care in remote areas, and the environmental impact of resource extraction. The riding's sheer geographic scale—spanning multiple time zones and requiring air travel to reach many communities—made representation a unique challenge among Canadian electoral districts.
