St. John's South--Mount Pearl

St. John's South--Mount Pearl is a federal electoral district covering the southern portion of the city of St. John's, the entire city of Mount Pearl (population 22,475 in 2021), and the rapidly growing town of Paradise. The riding also includes the communities of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, Goulds, and Kilbride. With a 2021 census population placing it among the most populated ridings in the province, the district stretches from St. John's International Airport and the suburban subdivisions of the south end to the shores of Conception Bay.

Candidates

Seamus O'Regan (Liberal) was born in St. John's and spent 14 years growing up in Goose Bay, Labrador, where his father served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. He studied politics at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and at University College Dublin in Ireland, and later studied marketing at INSEAD in France. O'Regan worked as a policy advisor and speechwriter for Newfoundland Premier Brian Tobin before launching a broadcasting career, co-hosting CTV's Canada AM from 2003 to 2011. He won the riding in 2015 and was serving in the federal cabinet heading into the 2021 election.

Ray Critch (NDP) was raised in the Cowan Heights and Goulds areas of the riding. The son of a fisherman and a primary school teacher, Critch was 12 years old when the 1992 cod moratorium devastated his family's fishing livelihood. He earned a bachelor's degree from Memorial University, a law degree from the University of New Brunswick, a master's degree from Memorial University, and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. A lawyer and teacher, Critch was endorsed by the environmental group 350 Canada during the campaign.

Steve Hodder (Conservative) is a real estate agent and lifelong Conservative Party supporter who became more actively involved with the party during the 2021 election cycle.

Georgia Faith Stewart (PPC) co-operates the bakery Sugar Mamas on Elizabeth Avenue in St. John's with her mother, Lainie Stewart, who ran simultaneously as the PPC candidate in Avalon. A mother of two, Stewart was a first-time candidate focused on small business support and health care improvements.

About the Riding

St. John's South--Mount Pearl is a largely suburban riding with a high rate of homeownership and a strong middle-class character. Mount Pearl, consistently ranked among Canada's safest communities, is a self-contained city with its own municipal services, recreation facilities, and commercial areas. Paradise, one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Atlantic Canada, has seen rapid residential development driven by families seeking affordable housing within commuting distance of St. John's.

The riding's economy is closely tied to the public sector, the offshore oil and gas industry, retail, and health care. Many residents are employed in the broader St. John's metropolitan economy, which depends heavily on offshore petroleum operations -- Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose, and Hebron -- and the associated supply chain of engineering, marine services, and fabrication companies. St. John's International Airport, located within the riding, is a significant employer and the province's main air transport hub.

Suburban infrastructure -- road congestion on the major arteries connecting Paradise and Mount Pearl to St. John's, water and sewer capacity, and school construction -- was a leading local concern in 2021. Housing affordability was an emerging issue as the St. John's market tightened. The riding's demographics are predominantly white and English-speaking, with a strong Christian majority. Federal issues in the 2021 campaign included support for the offshore oil sector amid global energy transition pressures, child care affordability, and the cost of living. O'Regan's profile as a cabinet minister gave the riding a higher national profile than most Newfoundland seats.
