Lakeland stretches across east-central Alberta from the Saskatchewan border in the east to the town of Athabasca in the northwest. Named for the hundreds of lakes, sloughs, and wetlands scattered across Alberta's parkland belt, the riding connects a string of small cities and towns through a landscape shaped by agriculture and petroleum extraction.
Candidates
Shannon Stubbs (Conservative) -- Born near Chipman, Alberta, Stubbs earned a Bachelor of Arts with joint honours in English and political science from the University of Alberta. Before entering politics she worked in the Oil Sands Business Unit of the Alberta Department of Energy, in the International Offices and Trade Division of Alberta Economic Development, and as a senior consultant with Hill+Knowlton Canada. First elected in 2015, she served as the Conservative critic for natural resources heading into 2019.
Jeffrey Swanson (NDP) -- A University of Alberta political science student and vice-president of the campus New Democrat club, Swanson was a first-time candidate who emphasized agricultural policy, small business support, and climate action.
Mark Watson (Liberal) -- The former deputy mayor of Smoky Lake and a former town councillor, Watson also served as president of the Liberal riding association. He campaigned on healthcare access and rural crime, and despite running for the Liberal Party, publicly supported expanding Alberta's energy sector.
Alain Houle (People's Party) -- Originally from Ontario, Houle relocated to Alberta at age 19 to work on an oil rig and later settled in Vegreville, where he worked as a power lineman for ATCO Electric. He joined the People's Party over concerns about the Conservative leadership and campaigned on balanced budgets and pipeline construction.
Kira Brunner (Green Party), Robert McFadzean (Libertarian), and Roberta Marie Graham (VCP) also sought election.
About the Riding
Lakeland's economy rests on petroleum and agriculture. The riding sits atop the western edge of the Lloydminster heavy oil belt, and the Bonnyville area hosts significant thermal heavy oil extraction operations. Lloydminster, straddling the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, functions as a regional hub for heavy oil upgrading and refining. Conventional oil and gas activity sustains drilling, pipeline, and service company employment throughout the constituency.
Agriculture anchors the riding's southern and central communities. The parkland zone produces canola, wheat, barley, and pulse crops, while mixed farming operations combining grain and cattle are common. Vermilion is home to Lakeland College, a post-secondary institution originally founded as the Vermilion School of Agriculture in 1913. St. Paul, another major service centre, gained international fame in 1967 when it built the world's first UFO landing pad as a Canadian Centennial project.
The riding's cultural mosaic reflects successive waves of settlement. Ukrainian-Canadian heritage is prominent in communities like Two Hills and the surrounding area, while St. Paul and nearby towns have deep Franco-Albertan roots. Three of Alberta's eight Metis Settlements -- Fishing Lake, Elizabeth, and Kikino -- lie within the riding, representing a significant Indigenous population with distinct self-governance structures unique to the province. Athabasca, at the riding's northwestern edge, is the home of Athabasca University, Canada's leading open and distance learning institution. Federal issues in 2019 included pipeline approvals, energy market access, agricultural trade policy, rural crime, Indigenous services and housing, and broadband connectivity for remote communities.
