Windsor--Tecumseh

Windsor--Tecumseh encompasses the eastern half of the City of Windsor and the neighbouring Town of Tecumseh, situated at the southwestern tip of Ontario along Lake St. Clair. The riding blends the blue-collar urban neighbourhoods of Windsor's east end with Tecumseh's quieter lakefront residential character. The area's economy has long been shaped by proximity to the Canada-United States border and the automotive manufacturing sector that defines the broader Windsor region.

Candidates

Irek Kusmierczyk (Liberal) -- A Windsor city councillor representing Ward 7. Born in Krasnik, Poland, in 1978, Kusmierczyk arrived in Canada in 1983 as a political refugee after his father was imprisoned as a member of the Solidarity movement. His family settled in Windsor, where his father worked as an engineer in the automotive industry. Kusmierczyk holds a PhD in political science from Vanderbilt University, an MA from Jagiellonian University, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University.

Cheryl Hardcastle (NDP) -- The incumbent MP, first elected in 2015. Before entering federal politics, Hardcastle worked for nearly twenty years as a reporter and editor at the Tecumseh Tribune. She served as deputy mayor of Tecumseh from 2011 to 2014, sitting on both Tecumseh Council and Essex County Council, where she chaired committees on accessibility, heritage, and the arts.

Leo Demarce (Conservative) -- A lifelong Tecumseh resident and small business owner who operated Sage Salon and Spa in Tecumseh alongside his wife. The business served approximately four hundred clients weekly and employed twenty-five staff.

Giovanni Abati (Green Party) -- A professional truck driver and environmental advocate who grew up in the Windsor area. Abati held a bachelor's degree in geography from the University of Windsor and had worked in waste management for over a decade.

Dan Burr ran for the People's Party and Laura Chesnik for the Marxist-Leninist Party.

About the Riding

Windsor--Tecumseh's economy is deeply connected to the North American automotive supply chain. The Windsor area has long been known as Canada's automotive capital, with parts manufacturers and assembly operations providing the backbone of local employment. The 2008-2009 recession devastated the regional economy, and while partial recovery had occurred by 2019, the riding's fortunes remained closely tied to the cyclical nature of manufacturing.

The Town of Tecumseh, a lakefront community of roughly twenty-three thousand, provides a suburban contrast to Windsor's industrial east end. Newer subdivisions have expanded onto former agricultural land, while the Lake St. Clair waterfront attracts residential development. The historic Hiram Walker distillery complex, founded in 1858 in Walkerville, remains an active spirits production facility and a local landmark. Cross-border trade with Detroit is a constant concern, as the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel handle substantial commercial and commuter traffic. The contest between Kusmierczyk and Hardcastle was one of the tightest races in the country, decided by a margin of just over six hundred votes.
