Scarborough—Guildwood

Scarborough—Guildwood stretches from the Lake Ontario shoreline northward to Highway 401 across the eastern half of Scarborough. The riding runs from Markham Road in the west to Morningside Avenue in the east, encompassing the neighbourhoods of Guildwood, Scarborough Village, Woburn, Morningside, and West Hill. Its southern boundary traces the Scarborough Bluffs, a fifteen-kilometre escarpment of layered sand and clay rising as high as sixty-five metres above the lake.

Candidates

John McKay (Liberal) — A real estate lawyer by training, McKay earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto Scarborough and his law degree from Queen's University. He served as president of the Durham Bar Association and as an executive member of the County and District Law Association before entering Parliament. First elected in 1997, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Paul Martin and sworn into the Queen's Privy Council in 2003. He was seeking his eighth consecutive term.

Quintus Thuraisingham (Conservative) — A community services professional, Thuraisingham had spent over two decades at Thomson Reuters in a senior product support role before serving as an adjudicator at Tribunals Ontario. He was active in community fundraising for organizations supporting seniors and mental health.

Michelle Spencer (NDP) — Spencer was the NDP's candidate in Scarborough—Guildwood, nominated at a meeting in August 2019.

Tara McMahon (Green Party) — McMahon carried the Green Party banner in the riding.

Jigna Jani stood for the People's Party of Canada. Kevin Clarke, Kathleen Marie Holding, and Stephen Abara ran as independents, Gus Stefanis for the Nationalist Party, and Farhan Alvi for CFF — Canada's Fourth Front.

About the Riding

Guild Park and Gardens, perched atop the Scarborough Bluffs, is the riding's most recognizable landmark. The park preserves architectural fragments salvaged from demolished Toronto buildings in a sculpture garden overlooking Lake Ontario, a legacy of the Guild of All Arts founded in the 1930s. The Guildwood neighbourhood itself was developed in the late 1950s, with winding roads and underground utilities that were innovative for the era.

North of Kingston Road, the riding's character shifts. Woburn is a diverse, mixed-income community with concentrations of apartment towers and townhouse complexes, while Morningside and West Hill feature blends of postwar single-family homes and newer infill development. Highland Creek, flowing through the riding's eastern section, is bordered by ravines and parks that provide green corridors through the urban landscape. Tamil, Tagalog, Bengali, and Urdu are among the most commonly spoken non-English languages. Transit access, affordable housing, and community safety have been persistent local issues, while erosion management along the Bluffs and water quality in Highland Creek have made environmental stewardship a recurring concern.
