Ottawa South

Ottawa South covers a broad arc of residential neighbourhoods south of Highway 417, from the tree-lined streets and mid-century homes of Alta Vista through the commercial hub at Billings Bridge, the dense apartment clusters of Heron Gate, and the suburban tracts of South Keys and Blossom Park, extending to the lands around the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The Rideau River traces the riding's eastern flank.

Candidates

David McGuinty (Liberal) — An environmental lawyer first elected in 2004, McGuinty was seeking his sixth consecutive term representing Ottawa South. Before entering Parliament he served as president and CEO of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, a government advisory body on sustainable development. His brother Dalton McGuinty served as Premier of Ontario from 2003 to 2013, and the McGuinty family's roots in the riding ran deep — their father, Dalton McGuinty Sr., had represented the provincial riding of Ottawa South as an MPP.

Eli Tannis (Conservative) — A Lebanese-Canadian entrepreneur, Tannis served as vice-president of Tannis Food Distributors, a family business operating in Ottawa South since 1976. He was a former president of the Hawthorn Business Park Association and a founding member of the Tannis21 Foundation, which had contributed more than $1.3 million to community hospitals and healthcare facilities in the Ottawa area.

Morgan Gay (NDP) — Gay was a national negotiator with the Public Service Alliance of Canada who had lived in Ottawa South for eighteen years. He served as secretary of the Alta Vista Community Association and sat on the board of the Heron Emergency Food Centre, and co-founded Pacifi, an organization promoting peace and nuclear disarmament.

Les Schram (Green Party) — Schram was a long-time Ottawa South resident with over thirty years in the riding. A Carleton University graduate who had worked in the financial services industry, he also ran for the provincial Green Party in the 2018 Ontario election.

Other candidates included Rodrigo Andre Bolanos (People's Party), Ahmed Bouragba (Independent), Larry Wasslen (Communist), and Sarmad Laith (Independent).

About the Riding

Ottawa South had been Liberal territory at the federal level for decades, with the McGuinty name carrying significant weight across the constituency. The riding's demographic profile was notably diverse, with large Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi, and Somali communities concentrated in neighbourhoods like Heron Gate and South Keys. Arabic was one of the most commonly spoken non-official languages in the riding.

The neighbourhoods within the constituency spanned a wide income range. Alta Vista's established homes near the Ottawa Hospital's General Campus housed many healthcare professionals, while Heron Gate's large rental complexes served a lower-income population and had been the subject of redevelopment proposals that raised concerns about tenant displacement. Billings Bridge served as a commercial crossroads, and the area around South Keys combined big-box retail with suburban housing.

Federal public service employment was a central economic concern, as a significant share of residents commuted to government offices downtown. Transit connectivity — particularly bus service linking the riding's southern reaches to the new light rail network — was a practical daily issue. Immigration policy, healthcare access, and housing affordability rounded out the concerns that shaped the contest in this multicultural constituency.
