About the Riding

Kanata—Carleton's identity is shaped by the technology sector. The Kanata North Business Park, Canada's largest technology park, houses more than 500 companies and employs tens of thousands of workers in fields from telecommunications to software to autonomous vehicle research. The park's origins trace to the Mitel and Nortel campuses that spurred Kanata's growth beginning in the 1970s; after Nortel's collapse in 2009, former employees launched startups while global firms such as BlackBerry QNX, Ciena, and Ericsson absorbed portions of the workforce. The rural western portion of the riding presents a contrasting landscape of agricultural operations, Ottawa River waterfront properties, and small-village life. Communities along the Ottawa River, including Constance Bay and Dunrobin, had recently experienced severe spring flooding and the damage from a tornado in September 2018, making emergency preparedness and climate resilience local concerns. Federal issues in 2019 included extending Ottawa's light rail transit system to suburban Kanata, broadband connectivity for rural residents, housing affordability in the rapidly growing western suburbs, and innovation policy supporting the technology sector.
