La Pointe-de-l'Île covers the easternmost neighbourhoods of the Island of Montreal, taking in the town of Montréal-Est, Pointe-aux-Trembles, and sections of Longue-Pointe and Mercier-Est. The riding follows the St. Lawrence River shoreline and sits at the terminus of the Montreal metro's green line, making transit connectivity a constant preoccupation for residents commuting westward to the city centre.
Candidates
Mario Beaulieu (Bloc Québécois) — A former president of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste of Montreal and spokesperson for the Mouvement Québec français, Beaulieu was first elected in this riding in 2015. He had served as Bloc Québécois leader from 2014 to 2015 and as interim leader from 2018 to early 2019. After Yves-François Blanchet assumed the permanent leadership in January 2019, Beaulieu continued as the party's critic for official languages.
Jonathan Plamondon (Liberal) — A mediator in labour relations with the federal government and lecturer at HEC Montréal, Plamondon was chosen as the Liberal standard-bearer in the riding. He campaigned on economic development priorities for the eastern end of the island.
Ève Péclet (NDP) — First elected during the 2011 NDP wave at age 22, Péclet had served one term as MP for La Pointe-de-l'Île before losing the seat to Beaulieu in 2015. A law graduate of the Université de Montréal, she attempted a comeback in 2019 after several years away from elected office.
Robert Coutu (Conservative) — The mayor of Montréal-Est since 2009, Coutu held an MBA from UQAM and an EMBA from the Université Paris-Dauphine. He had entered municipal politics as a councillor in 2005 and won three consecutive mayoral mandates, most recently in 2017.
Franco Fiori (Green Party) — Fiori carried the Green Party banner in a riding where environmental concerns tied to industrial legacy carried particular relevance.
Randy Manseau (People's Party), Jacinthe Lafrenaye (Pour l'Indépendance du Québec), and Geneviève Royer (ML) also sought election.
About the Riding
Home to approximately 106,000 residents, La Pointe-de-l'Île is a predominantly francophone urban district with notable Spanish-speaking, Creole-speaking, and Arabic-speaking communities. Montréal-Est's industrial waterfront has historically hosted petrochemical refineries and related operations, though facility closures in preceding years had sparked debate about economic diversification and environmental remediation. The working-class neighbourhoods of Pointe-aux-Trembles grew up around the area's manufacturing base and retain their residential character. Soil contamination from decades of industrial activity, air quality near remaining refinery operations, employment insurance access for workers affected by plant shutdowns, and the cost of living for families in the eastern boroughs were among the issues shaping the 2019 contest.
