Long Range Mountains

Long Range Mountains follows the western coastline of Newfoundland from Channel-Port aux Basques in the south to St. Anthony and L'Anse aux Meadows at the northern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. Named for the mountain range that forms the island's western backbone, the riding encompasses Corner Brook, the largest city on the west coast, along with Stephenville, Deer Lake, and dozens of smaller fishing and forestry communities.

Candidates

Gudie Hutchings (Liberal) — Hutchings won the riding comfortably in 2015 and entered the 2019 contest as the incumbent. Born in Corner Brook and raised in the Humber Valley, she attended Acadia University before spending nearly three decades in the tourism and outfitting industries, operating fly-fishing lodges in Labrador. She served as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association, sat on the national board of the Canadian Federation of Outfitting Associations, and led the Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce.

Josh Eisses (Conservative) — Eisses was the Conservative standard-bearer in the riding.

Holly Pike (NDP) — Pike ran as the NDP candidate in a riding where the party sought to present a progressive alternative to the Liberal incumbent.

Lucas Knill (Green Party) — Knill represented the Greens, campaigning on environmental protection in a region defined by its natural landscapes and outdoor tourism economy.

Robert Miles (VCP) — Miles ran under the Veterans Coalition Party banner, rounding out the five-candidate field.

About the Riding

Long Range Mountains is shaped by geography and distance. Corner Brook depends on its regional hospital, the Grenfell campus of Memorial University, and the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper mill, owned by Kruger Inc., which remains one of western Newfoundland's most important employers despite the broader decline in newsprint demand. Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its fjords and exposed mantle rock at the Tablelands, is a centrepiece of the riding's tourism economy. The Great Northern Peninsula sustains itself on fishing, seasonal tourism, and heritage sites, with the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows drawing visitors from around the world. Channel-Port aux Basques serves as the island's gateway through Marine Atlantic ferry service to Nova Scotia. Stephenville, originally built around Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, has faced ongoing economic adjustment since the loss of its paper mill in 2005. Federal issues in the 2019 campaign included carbon tax impacts on heating costs, rural broadband connectivity, support for the forestry sector, and management of northern cod stocks.
